Don Omar spent four years preaching at a church in Puerto Rico before he recorded a note. Born William Omar Landrón Rivera in Santurce in 1978, he left the pulpit for reggaeton and released The Last Don in 2003, the debut that carried "Dile" and "Pobre Diabla". He belts his hooks in a big blaring tenor instead of rapping them.
King of Kings (2006) reached No. 7 on the Billboard 200, higher than any reggaeton album had gone at that point, and produced "Angelito" and "Salió el Sol"; "Bandoleros", cut with Tego Calderón a year earlier, is the one crowds still shout back. "Danza Kuduro", his 2010 Spanish take on Lucenzo's "Vem Dançar Kuduro", topped Hot Latin Songs and hit No. 1 in several European countries. He won two Latin Grammys in 2012, for "Hasta Que Salga el Sol" and MTO2: New Generation, and played Rico Santos in four Fast & Furious films. He announced his retirement in 2017, was back by 2019, and opens The Last King World Tour across 21 US arenas on 25 September 2026.
