"Eccezionali" is Eros Ramazzotti's warm argument that ordinary people are remarkable, and that the proof is written on them.
The song opens on a portrait of us as we actually are: complicated and romantic, sometimes a step away from heaven, but more often stuck somewhere lower and a little melancholy. He calls us mammals dancing on this earth, flowers blooming in a city that behaves like a jungle, people who go on kissing even in the middle of a war. It is affectionate rather than cynical. We like to travel and we also like to stay, and either is fine as long as we do it well.
The chorus is where the title lands. We are exceptional forever, all of us born out of different stories. We carry marks on our skin, and those marks are the record of small wars we have already won. What won them was the love inside us, and Ramazzotti names that love a secret weapon.
The second verse admits the harder part. We are current and nostalgic at once, we want to be in control of everything, and we know perfectly well it does not work that way. We are fragile. What keeps the storm at a distance is love again, and the pull to come home is as strong as the pull to leave for somewhere better.
Near the end the song widens out into a list of contradictions we all live inside: united yet alone, generals and prophets, unique and lonely, all different, students and teachers at the same time. Ramazzotti does not resolve any of it. He simply says that being the sum of your small won wars is not damage, it is the thing that makes you exceptional, and that the love you carry is what got you here.
