Si Lyrics in English ZAZ

Below, I translated the lyrics of the song Si by ZAZ from French to English.
If I were the good Lord's friend
If I knew the prayers
If I had blue blood
The gift to wipe it clean and do it all over
If I were a queen or a magician
Princess, fairy, mighty captain
Of a noble regiment
If I had a giant's stride
I'd pour some sky into misery
All tears into a river
And I'd make the sands bloom
Where even hope slips away
I'd sow utopias
Bending would be banned
Nobody would look away anymore
If I had thousands and thousands
The talent, the strength, or the charms
Of the masters, of the mighty
If I had the keys to their souls
If I knew how to take up arms
In the fire of a titan army
I'd spark some flames
In the faded dreams of children
I'd color every sorrow
I'd invent Edens
For the luckless, the starless, the nobodies
But I've only a heart in rags
And two twig-thin outstretched hands
A voice the wind sweeps off at dawn
But if our bare hands join
Our millions of hearts together
If our voices joined
What winters could resist?
A strong world, a soulmate earth
We'll build within these ashes
Little by little
Crumb by crumb
Drop by drop
And heart to heart
Little by little
Crumb by crumb
Drop by drop
And heart to heart

SONG MEANING

“Si” invites us into a vivid day-dream where Zaz imagines herself as a goddess, queen, or giant able to erase misery with a sweep of her hand. Line after line, she paints fantastical pictures: tears turning into rivers, deserts bursting with flowers, lost hopes reborn in technicolor. Each “Si j’étais…” (If I were) verse piles on another wish, celebrating the limitless creativity of human imagination when we picture a kinder world.

Yet the song quickly brings us back to earth. Zaz admits she owns no crown, no magic, “just a ragged heart and twig-thin hands.” The turning point arrives when she realizes that while one person may be powerless, millions of ordinary hearts united can outlast any winter. The closing chant builds like a human chain: “peu à peu, miette à miette, goutte à goutte, et cœur à cœur” (little by little, crumb by crumb, drop by drop, and heart to heart). The message is clear and uplifting – grand change begins with small, shared gestures, and together we can rebuild a brighter world from the ashes. 🎶💕
