Little baby, you gotta stay quiet
Yeah, even if daddy hits your mom
Well, you’ll just have to get used to it
I know it hurts
Even when he walks away
But it’s totally normal
’Cause daddy’s got the biggest arms
And if some guy leers at you
You’ll have to stay quiet while and after he touches you
Shh, shh
You’ll have to stay silent
It’s tough, yeah, it’s tough, yeah
But you’ll just have to get used to it
Hush-a-bye, baby do
Baby will fall asleep real quick
Hush-a-bye, baby do
Baby will sleep
Hush-a-bye, baby do
Baby will fall asleep real quick
Hush-a-bye, baby do
Baby will sleep soon
And then you’ll see
That mom’s no better than dad
’Cause mom likes seeing other men
And even if it serves dad right
You won’t like it
When dad hits her she’ll scream
’Cause he’ll flip out once again
And he’ll do to you what they did to him
And he’ll say it’s all your fault
That real macho men don’t cry
They fight—well, they beat their wives
But especially their kids, and you’ll cry
Yeah, it’s no big deal
Yeah, you’ll forget
You’ll see, you will
Hush-a-bye, baby do
Baby will fall asleep real quick
Hush-a-bye, baby do
Baby will sleep
Hush-a-bye, baby do
Baby will fall asleep real quick
Hush-a-bye, baby do
Baby will sleep
Just a few more nights’ sleep
So daddy doesn’t get up
Even though you’ll be only a bit less sad when he’s gone
And then lots more nights’ sleep
And at last you’ll get some rest
Not right away but in a long, long time you’ll sleep
At last you’ll sleep
At last you’ll sleep
At last you’ll sleep

DodoSleepy / Lullaby

Dodo is a common French term of endearment, often used in the context of sleep, similar to "sleepy" or "bedtime" in English. It's also the title of a popular French lullaby, "Dodo, l'enfant do."

In Stromae's song, the word Dodo is used with a chilling irony. While it evokes the innocence of a child's lullaby, the lyrics describe a child's traumatic experiences with domestic violence and abuse. The song uses this seemingly gentle word to highlight the stark contrast between childhood innocence and harsh reality, making it incredibly impactful and memorable.

"Dodo" borrows its title from a French lullaby refrain, "Dodo, l'enfant do" [Hush-a-bye, baby do], but Stromae twists the melody into something much darker. Instead of soothing a baby to sleep, the singer describes what the child will grow up to witness: "Ouai même si papa frappe ta mère" [Yeah, even if daddy hits your mom], followed by a chilling shrug, "Mais c'est tout à fait normal" [But it's totally normal]. The song walks through a whole cycle of abuse, first aimed at the child, then at the mother, always excused and always repeated.

By the second verse the roles start to blur. Stromae sings "Et il te feras ce qu'on lui faisait" [And he'll do to you what they did to him], showing how the violence gets passed down instead of stopped. The lullaby chorus keeps returning between each verse, promising rest, but the closing line changes what that rest actually means: "Pas tout de suite mais dans longtemps, très longtemps tu dormiras" [Not right away but in a long, long time you'll sleep]. What sounded like a bedtime song at the start ends up describing a much longer, much sadder kind of sleep.
