Vielleicht Vielleicht Lyrics in English by AnnenMayKantereit
verschweigen means to deliberately keep something secret by not speaking about it; to conceal. It's a powerful verb built from schweigen (to be silent), but it implies a more active hiding of information.
In the song, the singer expresses a profound level of intimacy with the line "Ich kann dir erzählen was ich mir selbst verschweige" (I can tell you what I keep secret even from myself). This beautiful lyric uses the word to show a vulnerability so deep that he can share thoughts with his partner that he wouldn't even admit to himself.
Henning May's voice is famously gravelly, and here he spends it on the gentlest material imaginable: a list of reasons his relationship is easy. It starts with honesty, "Es ist so leicht ehrlich zu dir zu sein" (It's so easy to be honest with you), and even saying no costs him nothing, because "Du gibst mir Zeit" (You give me time). The proof is in tiny domestic details. She is happy "Dass es im Winter endlich schneit" (That it's finally snowing in winter), he wakes up to her kisses, and she stands in front of him after a shower announcing "es wird ein langer Tag" (it's gonna be a long day). The word leicht (easy, light) comes back so often that the chorus is just him saying it eight times, which is either sweet or a bit much depending on your mood.
The best line arrives late: "Ich kann dir erzählen was ich mir selbst verschweige" (I can tell you what I hide from myself). That is a big claim to slip into a song this quiet. Then the title does its job. He wants this to last forever and says "Und ich glaube, das geht" (And I believe that's possible), immediately hedged with "Vielleicht, vielleicht" (Maybe, maybe), over and over. For a German learner, vielleicht is one of the first words worth keeping, and here it is the whole song's caution in one word.
