"Leylam" feels like a late–night rant to a friend after a breakup, where the jokes and the pain are mixed in the same glass. The singer is drowning in sadness "gece gece" [late at night] and says he will write down everything she made him feel "hece hece" [syllable by syllable], like he’s turning their story into a detailed emotional report. He tells Leyla that it’s over now, but then admits he’s heard she cries every night and says "ölürüm" [I’d die] in response, which shows he still cares even though he’s trying to act tough. He questions her love, asking "Çok mu sevdin sen?" [Did you love that much?], and he clearly doesn’t want to be fooled anymore: "sence yer miyim ben?" [do you think I’d fall for that?].
The song keeps jumping between hurt and dark humor. She complains he gave too many "taviz" [concessions, compromises], and he knows she’s scared of "düşmek" [falling, failing], like she is afraid to lose control. When she says "'Ağdayım' diyor bir balık gibi" [She says, "I’m on the hook" like a fish], he answers, "'Sular bulanık gibi'" [The waters seem muddy], so he doesn’t trust the situation at all. There’s a great twist on the classic Leyla & Mecnun love story: "Kafalar Leyla" [Our heads are like Leyla, meaning totally lost], "Mecnun gelip çekti kapına bir Maybach" [Mecnun came to your door and pulled up in a Maybach]. Instead of a barefoot desert lover, Mecnun drives a luxury car now, which is funny and a bit cynical about modern love.
The chorus is full of strong images for how broken he feels. He says "Sudan çıkmış balık gibiyim" [I’m like a fish out of water], then immediately adds "Şimdi tertemizim, mis gibi oldum" [Now I’m very clean, I’ve become fresh and nice], as if the pain washed him but also left him gasping. At the same time, he’s "Kafesteki kuş gibiyim" [I’m like a bird in a cage] with "Kanatlarım kırıldı, uçamıyorum" [My wings are broken, I can’t fly], so even though he says he’s clean and better, he still feels stuck and unable to move on. That mix of freedom language and prison language is what makes the song hit: he’s out of the relationship, but emotionally he’s still trapped in it, talking to Leyla like she’s both the problem and the person he can’t stop singing to.
