Weiße Fahnen Lyrics in English Silbermond

Below, I translated the lyrics of the song Weiße Fahnen by Silbermond from German to English.
It's a cold day
Inside his burning heart
And a loud fire
Ignites the sky again
And he runs for his life
All his young life
He's borne his fathers' war
But never started it
And every time he falls asleep
He dreams himself far away
He dreams himself into silence
He dreams himself gone
A gentle wind blows
And the sky is wide
This war is over
And the soldiers go home
And white flags wave
And everybody's free, free, free
Tonight, my friend
I've dreamt of peace
And he wakes up
In a rain of fire
The night paralyzed
No stars to see
Through his little hands
Red sand flows
He knows how lives end
But not how they begin
And every time he falls asleep
He dreams himself far away
He dreams himself into silence
He dreams himself gone
A gentle wind blows
And the sky is wide
This war is over
And the soldiers go home
And white flags wave
And everybody's free, free, free
Tonight, my friend
I've dreamt of peace
So many dreams lie buried here
But he's never stopped
Daring to dream
Now he's far away
With healed wounds
His little hands
Have found peace

SONG MEANING

Weiße Fahnen paints a moving picture of a child growing up amid war. In the verses we feel the contrast between a “kalter Tag in seinem heißen Herz” and the fiery chaos overhead. Although the boy has never started his fathers’ war, he carries its weight every single day. Each night, he escapes through dreams of silence, open skies, and armies laying down their arms while white flags ripple gently in the wind — a universal symbol of surrender and, more importantly, of hope.

Yet reality keeps pulling him back: flames replace stars, and roter Sand (red sand) slips through his tiny fingers, reminding us how fragile life is. Still, he refuses to give up on his inner world of peace. By the song’s end, those persistent dreams finally blossom into freedom. The child, now healed, has “found peace” in his own hands, proving that even in the bleakest landscape the human spirit can imagine, believe, and ultimately create a future where everyone is frei, frei, frei.
