"Los Valientes De Ahora" is a corrido, and like the best corridos it tells a whole story in a few verses: a man is ambushed and killed, and the song is furious about how it happened. The opening sets it up as a hunt: "Nadie le dijo a la presa / El día que sería la caza" (Nobody told the prey / the day the hunt would be). He goes for his gun, "Del cuadril hacia la mano" (from the hip to the hand), and his reaction is good, but "Se portó mal el seguro" (the safety let him down). Even so, he "alcanzó a llevarse uno" (managed to take one of them with him).
The chorus is pure contempt. "Lléguenme de uno por uno" (come at me one at a time) is the dare, and then the punchline: "Se ocuparon varios rifles / Para una sola pistola" (it took several rifles for a single pistol). That is the title's sarcasm: los valientes que hay ahora (the brave men of today) are hitmen, sicarios, who only attack en bola (in a gang, a Mexican slang phrase). The second verse hints at betrayal: rumours say it was envy or a mitote (gossip, a fuss), and he had no enemies, "Pero sí muchos deudores" (but plenty of people who owed him money). Learner tip: pa' is the spoken short form of para, and you will hear it everywhere in this genre.
