Adriana Calcanhotto grew up in Porto Alegre, the daughter of a musician of Italian descent, and started playing music professionally in the mid-1980s. She moved to Rio de Janeiro and spent years working the city's small bars and street festivals, repeating the same short set night after night before it caught on, and released her debut album, a mix of covers and one original song, in 1990.

Her sound sits inside MPB but pulls from samba, bossa nova, rock and pop, carried by a wide vocal range and a phrasing that reads almost conversational. The self-written Senhas (1992) gave her the hit "Esquadros," and Marítimo (1998) produced "Vambora," still one of her most streamed songs. She later built a parallel persona, Adriana Partimpim, for a run of children's albums, and she has taught and served as an artistic ambassador at the University of Coimbra in Portugal.

Mentira
Você não foi embora
Lá fora é dia
Cá dentro, o relento
Lie
You didn't leave
Outside it's day
Inside, the night chill

This song starts with a blunt statement the singer repeats to convince herself: "Mentira / Você não foi embora" [Lie / You didn't go away]. She insists her lover hasn't left, but the feeling inside her home says something different. While "Lá fora é dia" [Outside it's day], her world is cold and damp, like the night air.

Everywhere she looks, she sees proof. His things are exactly where they've always been, from "Suas camisetas / Seguem nas gavetas" [Your t-shirts / Are still in the drawers] to the very specific "Havaianas pretas no corredor" [black Havaianas in the hallway]. The song's title, "Reticências" [Ellipses], is perfect for this feeling of something left unfinished, hanging in the air just like the "Anéis de fumaça" [Rings of smoke] she mentions. It's a quiet, stubborn refusal to accept that someone is gone when all their stuff is still right there.

Mentira
No te fuiste

Fico Assim Sem Você (I'm Like This Without You)
Avião sem asa, fogueira sem brasa
Sou eu assim sem você
Futebol sem bola, Piu-Piu sem Frajola
Sou eu assim sem você
Airplane without wings, bonfire without embers
That's me without you
Soccer without a ball, Tweety without Sylvester
That's me without you

Have you ever felt so incomplete without someone that it feels like you're missing a part of yourself? That's exactly what this song is about. Adriana Calcanhotto uses a list of funny and sweet comparisons to describe this feeling. She says she's like an "Avião sem asa" (Airplane without a wing) or, in a classic Brazilian reference, "queijo sem goiabada" (cheese without guava paste). It's a list of things that just don't make sense on their own, from "Futebol sem bola" (Soccer without a ball) to the famous cartoon duo "Piu-Piu sem Frajola" (Tweety Bird without Sylvester).

But it's not all fun and games. The feeling is so intense that she says, "Eu não existo longe de você" (I don't exist far from you), and that "a solidão é o meu pior castigo" (loneliness is my worst punishment). She's so desperate to see her love again that she feels like time itself is against her: "Eu conto as horas pra poder te ver / Mas o relógio tá de mal comigo" (I count the hours to see you / But the clock is mad at me). It's a simple, direct, and powerful way to talk about missing someone so much it hurts.

Prova Dos Nove (The Litmus Test)
Tenho o corpo italiano
O nascimento no Brasil
A alma lusitana
A mátria africana
I have the Italian body
Birth in Brazil
The Lusitanian soul
African Matria

Have you ever felt like you're a mix of many different places and cultures? In "Prova Dos Nove," Brazilian artist Adriana Calcanhotto explores this very idea. She describes a rich and complex identity, tracing her roots across the globe:

  • An Italian body
  • A birth in Brazil
  • A Portuguese soul
  • An African motherland
  • Jewish blood

With so many influences, she sometimes feels like an "impostora" (impostor), as if she doesn't perfectly fit into any single category. It's a song about celebrating a unique heritage that is made of many wonderful parts.

Beyond her background, the singer reveals she's a dreamer who "vivo no mundo da lua" (lives on the moon), yet she is strong enough to cross deserts, even if she prefers the sea. The song's title, which means "Proof of Nines," comes from a math trick used to check if a calculation is correct. For her, the ultimate test of a life well-lived is simple: joy. She holds a "crença na alegria como prova dos nove" (belief in joy as the proof of nines), suggesting that happiness is the true measure of everything.

Løgn
Du dro ikke
Ute er det dag
Her inne, fukten

Helt vanlige, hverdagslige ting blir påminnelser: "Suas camisetas / Seguem nas gavetas" (T-skjortene dine / er fortsatt i skuffene) og "As Havaianas pretas no corredor" (De svarte Havaianas-sandalene i gangen).

Quem Te Disse? (Who Told You?)
Não me quer porque sou branca
Não me quer eu não sou moça
Não me quer por ser mulher
Ainda que eu fosse santa
She doesn't want me because I'm white
Don't want me I'm not a girl
She doesn't want me because she's a woman
Even though I was a saint

Have you ever felt judged for who you are? In "Quem Te Disse?", which means "Who Told You?", Brazilian artist Adriana Calcanhotto confronts this exact feeling. The singer lists all the reasons someone might not want her, touching on everything from her race and gender to her age and heritage. It's a powerful way of showing how prejudice can create barriers to love.

But the song doesn't stop there! The chorus flips the script, directly asking, "Quem te disse que o amor vê diferenças?" ("Who told you that love sees differences?"). Addressing the listener with affectionate names like Lindeza (Beauty) and Rainha (Queen), Calcanhotto encourages them to let go of these limiting beliefs. It's a beautiful and catchy reminder that love should be about connection, not categories.

Bugia

Opisuje kontrast medzi vonkajším svetom a svojím bytom: „Lá fora é dia / Cá dentro, o relento“ [Vonku je deň / Tu vnútri, chlad a vlhko].

Všade vidí stopy po svojom bývalom partnerovi: „Suas camisetas / Seguem nas gavetas / As Havaianas pretas no corredor“ [Tvoje tričká / Sú stále v zásuvkách / Čierne Havaianas na chodbe].

Vale

Siin sees, jahedus

Brasiilia laulja Adriana Calcanhotto laul „Reticências” (tõlkes „Mõttepunktid”) algab otsese enesepettusega: sõnaga „Mentira” („Vale”) püüab ta eitada tõsiasja, et teine inimene on lahkunud. Toas valitseb kummaline kontrast, sest „Lá fora é dia / Cá dentro, o relento” („Väljas on päev / Siin sees on öine niiskus ja külmus”). Välise valguse asemel on toas jahe tühjus, mida laulja püüab tõrjuda tuttavate esemetega.

Lahkuminekut ei kirjeldata siin suure draamaga, vaid korterisse jäänud asjade kaudu. Sahtlis on ikka veel teise särgid („Suas camisetas / Seguem nas gavetas”) ja koridoris seisavad mustad plätud („As Havaianas pretas no corredor” – Havaianas on kuulus Brasiilia varbavaheplätude kaubamärk).

Ova pjesma počinje snažnom i jednostavnom izjavom: „Mentira“ (Laž).

„Suas camisetas / Seguem nas gavetas“ (Tvoje majice / I dalje su u fiokama) i „As Havaianas pretas no corredor“ (Crne japanke u hodniku).

Ši braziliška daina prasideda žodžiu „Mentira“ (Melas). Dainininkė bando save įtikinti, kad jos mylimas žmogus niekur nedingo. Ji sukuria kontrastą tarp išorinio pasaulio, kur „Lá fora é dia“ (Lauke diena), ir savo vidinio pasaulio, kur „Cá dentro, o relento“ (O viduje – šaltis ir drėgmė). Nors lauke šviečia saulė, jos namai atrodo šalti ir apleisti.

Tai ne dideli romantiški gestai, o paprasti, kasdieniai daiktai: „Suas camisetas / Seguem nas gavetas“ (Tavo marškinėliai / vis dar stalčiuose) ir „As Havaianas pretas no corredor“ (Juodos „Havaianas“ šlepetės koridoriuje). Būtent šios smulkmenos ir daro išsiskyrimą tokį skausmingą. Dainos pavadinimas „Reticências“ (Daugtaškis) puikiai tinka – dainininkės galvoje ši istorija dar nesibaigė.

Дрехите все още стоят подредени („Suas camisetas / Seguem nas gavetas“ - „Твоите тениски / Още са в чекмеджетата“), а черните джапанки на известната бразилска марка са зарязани в коридора („As Havaianas pretas no corredor“).

Začne z besedo "Mentira" (Laž) in ponavlja: "Você não foi embora" (Nisi odšel).

Dokazi, da oseba ni odšla, so povsod okoli nje, v obliki vsakdanjih predmetov. To niso velike romantične geste, ampak majhne, resnične stvari: "Suas camisetas / Seguem nas gavetas" (Tvoje majice / so še vedno v predalih) in "As Havaianas pretas no corredor" (Črni natikači Havaianas na hodniku).

Nômade é quando a casa é o corpo
E é onde te recebo
E é o que te entrego
Nomadic means without land
Nomadic is when the home is the body
And that's where I get you
And this is what I give you

What does it mean to be a nomad? In her song "Nômade," Brazilian artist Adriana Calcanhotto explores this very idea. She paints a picture of a life lived without a fixed address or a permanent resting place ("sem pouso," "sem porto"). Instead of a physical house, the singer's home is her own body: "Nômade é quando a casa é o corpo." This is where she connects with others, where she receives and gives of herself.

This nomadic life is one of freedom from material things. The singer declares, "Não levo nada / Não guardo grana / Não visto a fama" (I don't carry anything / I don't save money / I don't wear fame). The only thing she carries into the next day is herself. The only souvenir from her travels might be a forgotten hotel key in her pocket, a small reminder of a temporary stop. This lifestyle isn't necessarily easy, as she notes, "Não tem o que não dê trabalho" (There's nothing that doesn't take work). But it's a path she forges for herself, tracing her way through cosmic elements like stardust and dark matter.

Tämä brasilialaisen Adriana Calcanhotton popkappale Reticências alkaa suoralla kieltämisellä: Mentira / Você não foi embora (”Valetta / Et sinä ole lähtenyt”). Laulaja väittää toisen olevan yhä paikalla, vaikka todellisuus puskee läpi vastakohdissa. Ulkona paistaa aurinko, mutta asunnon sisällä on kylmää ja lohdutonta kuin yökasteessa: Lá fora é dia / Cá dentro, o relento (”Ulkona on päivä / Täällä sisällä yökaste/kylmyys”). Koko tarina rakentuu esineille, jotka toinen jätti jälkeensä.

Poissaolosta huolimatta koti on yhä täynnä toisen tavaroita: Suas camisetas / Seguem nas gavetas (”T-paitasi / ovat yhä laatikoissa”) ja käytävällä lojuvat As Havaianas pretas no corredor (”Mustat Havaianas-sandaalit käytävällä”).

Giden kişinin eşyaları hâlâ her yerdedir: çekmecedeki tişörtler ("Suas camisetas / Seguem nas gavetas" [Senin tişörtlerin / Hâlâ çekmecelerde]) veya koridorda duran o siyah terlikler ("As Havaianas pretas no corredor" [Koridordaki siyah Havaianas terlikler]).

The singer addresses a former partner, confidently predicting that they will miss her. She paints a picture of their life without her: the days will drag on, and the nights will feel dizzy and endless.

Amid this prediction, the singer questions the nature of their past romance. She asks if love is supposed to be an intense, all-consuming fire that just burns and burns, only to disappear suddenly, "without warning". She wonders if the two lovers were simply "fuel" for this passionate flame, destined to be used up. It's a powerful reflection on a fiery relationship that ended abruptly, leaving behind questions and the certainty of a lingering absence.

Reticências (Wielokropek)
Mentira

Jej koszulki nadal leżą w szufladach – „Suas camisetas / Seguem nas gavetas” (Twoje koszulki / wciąż są w szufladach) – a czarne klapki stoją w korytarzu. Wszystko jest na swoim miejscu, oprócz niej. Tytuł piosenki, „Reticências”, oznacza wielokropek (...) i idealnie pasuje do tej sytuacji. To symbol niedokończonej sprawy, zawieszenia w próżni, gdy wszystko wciąż krzyczy: „Tudo seu / Ainda” (Wszystko twoje / Wciąż).

Reticências (Tři tečky)
Mentira
Você não foi embora
Lá fora é dia
Cá dentro, o relento
Lež
Neodešel jsi
Venku je den
Tady uvnitř, chlad

Brazilská zpěvačka Adriana Calcanhotto v písni Reticências popisuje stav, kdy někdo odešel, ale vy si to odmítáte připustit.
