Big Bang Lyrics in English by Gipsy Kings, Tonino Baliardo
Bendita means "blessed" or "holy." While "bless" is a common concept, the word bendita itself is less frequently featured in popular song lyrics compared to more common verbs or nouns.
In "Big Bang," the Gipsy Kings use bendita to describe the "santa mano bendita de Dios" (the holy, blessed hand of God) from which the Earth and humanity were born. This gives the word a profound and almost mystical significance, connecting the creation of the universe to a divine, blessed origin.
The Gipsy Kings tell the origin of the universe as a rumba, and they seat the stars in the audience. "Las estrellas nos miraban, las estrellas" (The stars were watching us, the stars) opens it, and what the stars are watching is not an explosion but us: "Miraban la Tierra, la gente, los hombres" (They looked at the Earth, the people, the men). Then comes the line that settles what kind of song this is going to be, "Canta, canta, canta, cómo lo bailan" (Sing, sing, sing, how they dance it). Creation itself gets one sentence of physics, "Lo hizo de su mano, el Big Bang" (He made it with his hand, the Big Bang), and six drum hits.
Whose hand is never in question. "De la santa mano bendita de Dios" (From the holy blessed hand of God) is the answer the song keeps coming back to, and everything after it is counted off the same way: "Nacía la Tierra, bang, bang, bang" (The Earth was born, bang, bang, bang), then men, then the Earth again, until the bangs stop sounding like an explosion and start sounding like handclaps. The guitars take the middle of the track for a good twenty seconds with nobody singing over them, which is roughly what a Tonino Baliardo credit is for. When the voices return they are arguing about scale: "Que no, que no, que no, que no, no hay más grande" (No, no, no, no, there is nothing greater). A cosmology you can dance to is a very Gipsy Kings way to explain where everything came from.
