Alswinn Lyrics in English by Faun
Below, I translated the lyrics of the song Alswinn by Faun from German to English.
Vaters Hengst hab ich gefüttert
I fed my father's stallion
Einen Winter lang bewacht
Guarded it all winter long
Siebte Gerste, wusch den Hafer
Sifted barley, washed the oats
Doch entkam er letzte Nacht
But he escaped last night
Ich begab mich auf die Suche
I set out on the search
Hat im Sinn dies Pferde nur
Only had this horse in mind
Zog und spähte durch die Heide
Roamed and peered through the heath
Doch verlor ich seine Spur
But I lost his track
Welches Zeichen trägt das Pferd nun
What mark does the horse now bear
Über'm Aug die Sonnenscheib'
Above its eye, the sun disk
Auf der Stirn den grossen Bären
On its forehead, the Great Bear
Silbern glänzt des nachts sein Leib'
Silvery shines its body at night
Seinen Hals ziert eine Schelle
A bell adorns its neck
Es gleicht keinem andren Pferde
It resembles no other horse
Bis zum Himmel reicht sein Nacken
Its neck reaches up to the sky
Und sein Schweif berührt die Erde
And its tail touches the earth
Auf den Hufen trägt es Runen
It bears runes on its hooves
Wandert übers Himmelsrund
It wanders over the celestial sphere
Zieht in seinem goldnen Wagen
It pulls in its golden chariot
Die Sonne bis zur Abendstund
The sun until the evening hour

Sonnenscheib' — sun disk
Sonnenscheib' is a poetic and slightly archaic form of "Sonnenscheibe," meaning "sun disk" or "sun's disc." It evokes an ancient, mythical image of the sun.
In the song, it refers to a distinctive mark on the legendary horse Alswinn: "über'm Aug die Sonnenscheib'" (above the eye, the sun disk). This word is interesting because it's not a common everyday term, and it immediately paints a vivid, almost magical picture, hinting at the extraordinary nature of the horse.
