Verse 1
sugiteyukunda kyou mo
Today is passing by too
kono jumyou no toori ni
Just as this lifespan runs
kagiri aru suuji ga heru you ni
As if a limited number is going down
utsukushii suuji ga fueru you ni
As if a beautiful number is going up
omoide no houko
A treasure trove of memories
furui mono wa tana no oku ni
The old things at the back of the shelf
hokori o kabutteiru noni
Even though they're covered in dust
hokori ga hikatte mieru you ni
Somehow seem to shine with pride
saredo
And yet
(English)
Prechorus 1
fuan kassai rentai
Anxiety, applause, solidarity
nigottari no anzen chitai
A murky kind of safe zone
guwanguwan ni naru
My head starts spinning
asagata no kentaikan
The weariness of early morning
sanban hoomu junkyuu densha
Platform three, the semi-express train
ao ni nita
Something like blue
suppai haru to rairakku
Sour spring and lilacs
Chorus 1
kimi o matsu yo koko de ne
I'll wait for you, right here
itamidasu jinsei tan'i no kizu mo
Even the lifelong wounds that start to ache
itooshiku omoitai
I want to see them as precious
sagasu ate mo nai noni
Even though we have no idea where to look
wasureteshimau bokura wa
We're the ones who keep forgetting
Oh nani o hete nani o ete
Oh, going through what, gaining what
otona ni natteyukundarou
Are we growing up, I wonder?
Verse 2
ikkai dake no chansu o
A chance that comes only once
miokutteshimau koto ga nai you ni
So that I never let it slip by
itsudemo kakato o ukashiteitai
I want to always be on my toes
dakedomo muzukashii you ni
But it seems so hard
shujinkou no kouho
A candidate for the main character
kurai ni jibun o omotteita noni
That's how I saw myself, and yet
namae mo nai yaku no youna
I'm more like some role without a name
supin'ofu mo tsukurenai yo na
Nobody could even make a spin-off about me
takaga
Even if it's just
(English)
Prechorus 2
kudaranai ai o utau sai
When I sing about a silly love
usotsuki ni wa naritakunai
I don't want to be a liar
wasawasasuru mune
My chest feels restless
asagata no utomashisa
The dreariness of early morning
zurashite noru kyuukou densha ah
I shift my timing and ride the express train, ah
Bridge 1
kage ga itai
The shadows hurt
kachi nanka nai
None of it is worth anything
boku dake ga hitori no youna
Like I'm the only one who's alone
yoru ga kirai
I hate the night
kimi ga kirai
I hate you
yasashiku narenai boku desu
I'm someone who can't be kind
hikari ga itai
The light hurts
kibou nanka kirai
I hate things like hope
boku dake oitekebori no youna
Like I'm the only one left behind
yoru ga kirai
I hate the night
hitori ga kowai
I'm scared of being alone
wagamama ga kojireta bitoku
A virtue that's just selfishness gone twisted
Chorus 2
fukanzenna omoi mo
Even these imperfect feelings
ikansen daiji ni shitakute
I just can't help wanting to cherish
fuan darake no hibi demo
Even through days full of anxiety
aishitemiru
I'll try to love them
kanjita koto no nai
The kind I've never felt before
kuso mitaina haibokukan mo
Even this sh*tty sense of defeat
dore mo kore mo ga boku o
Each and every one of them
tsukiugokashiteru
Is driving me forward
Chorus 3
kodou ga yurasu kono daichi to haitatchi
A high-five with this earth that my heartbeat shakes
subete kaketa ano natsu mo
That summer I gave everything for, too
iroase wa shinai wasurerarenai na
Won't ever fade, I can't forget it
kyou o ikiru tame ni
In order to live today
sagasu ate mo nai noni
Even though we have no idea where to look
nakushiteshimau bokura wa
We end up losing things
Oh nan no tame ni dare no tame ni
Oh, for what, for whom
kizu o fuyashiteyukundarou
Do we keep adding to our scars, I wonder?
Chorus 4
ame ga furu sono ato ni
Just as after the rain falls
midori ga sodatsu you ni
The green begins to grow
Oh imi no nai koto wa nai to
Oh, believing there's nothing
shinjite susumou ka
Without meaning, shall we move on?
kotae ga nai koto bakari
So many things have no answer
dakara koso aisou to mo
That's exactly why I'll try to love them
Outro 1
ano koro no ao o
The blue of those days
oboeteiyou ze
Let's keep remembering it
nigami ga kasanatte mo
Even if the bitterness piles up
hikatteru
It's still shining
wari ni awanai kizu mo
Even the scars that aren't worth it
mitometeageyou ze
Let's go ahead and accept them
boku wa bokujishin o
Me, myself
aishiteru
I love
aiseteru
I'm able to love myself

Lilac is a song about getting older on an ordinary morning commute, and I love how unglamorous it lets itself be. The singer is on platform three waiting for a semi-express train, groggy and a little sick of himself, and he sums up the season as "すっぱい春とライラック" (a sour spring and lilac). Not sweet, not tragic. Sour. That one word does a lot of work.

The early verses play with a pun you would miss in translation: dust is 埃 (hokori) and pride is 誇り (hokori), so the old memories at the back of the shelf are covered in dust yet still shine with pride. Then the self-mockery kicks in. He thought of himself as "主人公の候補" (a candidate for main character), but now feels like a role with no name, one that would not even get a spin-off. That is a very funny and very sad line at the same time.

The middle gets blunt. "夜が嫌い" (I hate the night) and "君が嫌い" (I hate you) arrive with no softening at all, followed by "優しくなれない僕です" (I'm someone who can't be kind). It is a sulky little tantrum, and the song does not pretend it is anything nobler.

What turns it around is the image of rain: "雨が降るその後に" (after the rain falls) green things grow, so maybe nothing is meaningless. By the end he goes from wanting to love himself to "愛せてる" (I'm able to love myself), a small grammar shift from trying to actually doing it. Learners, watch that ending: 愛してる is "I love", while 愛せてる uses the potential form, "I'm able to love". Fittingly, the whole song is about that gap.
