Girls In Love Lyrics in English by Andreas Dorau
Versetzte comes from the verb versetzen, which can mean to move, displace, or even to pawn something. In this song, it's used in the context of pawning.
The lyrics state, "Fr ihn versetzte sie ihr letztes Hemd" (For him, she pawned her last shirt). This reveals the depth of her devotion and desperation, as she sacrifices her last possession for a man who is unfaithful. It's a poignant and somewhat archaic word choice that highlights the tragic nature of her love.
“Girls In Love” pairs a catchy, chant-like English chorus with vivid German storytelling to expose the perils of blind devotion. We meet a 16-year-old girl who, swept off her feet by the local “King,” gives him everything: her time, her money, even her last shirt. While she works, he cheats; while friends warn her, she clings tighter. The chorus keeps repeating that girls in love will give you everything, turning the pop hook into a warning siren as the verses grow darker. Eventually, heartbreak and hopelessness push her to a tragic end, and only then does the unfaithful boy realize what he has lost.
Behind its bright melody, the song offers a sobering message: unconditional love without self-respect can be dangerous. Dorau contrasts the glitter of puppy love with the grit of real consequences, reminding listeners to value themselves as much as the people they adore.
