Verse 1
Today I need to find you no matter what
Even if it's just to take you home
After an ordinary day
Look into your eyes full of easy promises
And kiss you on the mouth in a way that makes you laugh
That makes you laugh
Verse 2
Today I need to hug you
Smell your scent of clean laundry
To forget my worries
And sleep in peace
Verse 3
Today I need to hear any word from you
Any over-the-top phrase that makes me feel joy
In being alive
Today I need to have a coffee
Hearing you sigh
And you saying I'm the cause of your insomnia
That I always do everything wrong
Always
Chorus 1
Today I need you
In any mood
With any smile
Today only your presence will make me happy
Just today
Verse 4
Today I need to hear any word from you
Any over-the-top phrase that makes me feel joy
In being alive
Today I need to have a coffee
Hearing you sigh
And you saying I'm the cause of your insomnia
That I always do everything wrong
Always
Chorus 2
Today I need you
In any mood
With any smile
Today only your presence will make me happy
Just today
Chorus 3
Today I need you
In any mood
With any smile
Today only your presence will make me happy, happy
Just today

insônia — insomnia

Insônia means 'insomnia' in Portuguese. It's a specific and evocative word that immediately brings to mind sleepless nights and deep emotional states.

In the song, the singer expresses a desire to hear their loved one say, "que eu sou o causador da tua insônia" (that I am the cause of your insomnia). This line beautifully captures the intensity of their connection, suggesting that the singer's presence (or absence) is so impactful it keeps their partner awake. It's a poetic way to convey profound affection and longing, making it a memorable and intriguing word to learn.

Jota Quest wrote a love song with no grand gestures in it at all. The whole thing is a list of small, slightly needy things the singer wants today. He wants to find her "de qualquer jeito" (no matter what), "Nem que seja só pra te levar pra casa" (even if it's just to take you home) after a perfectly boring day. That phrase de qualquer jeito is worth stealing: Brazilians say it constantly when they mean "somehow, whatever it takes".

My favourite line is "Sentir teu cheiro de roupa limpa" (smell your scent of clean laundry). It is such an unglamorous detail, and it's exactly why it works. Then the chorus gets funny: he wants to have coffee while she sighs at him, "E dizendo que eu sou o causador da tua insônia" (and saying I'm the cause of your insomnia), "Que eu faço tudo errado sempre" (that I always do everything wrong). He doesn't need her in a good mood either: "Com qualquer humor" (in any mood) will do. Notice the songwriter uses teu and tua (your) with você, which mixes two ways of saying "you". Textbooks frown on it, but it's how a lot of Brazilians actually talk. And the title, "Só hoje" (just today), is a sweet little trick: he only asks for one day, every day.
