Verse 1
I no longer have anything to wait for
There are things that cannot be predicted
Rain falling while I drink tea
That life advances with stumbles as it runs
Verse 2
The same cup that I already tried
With the taste of a day I forgot
Notes from a paper, which I didn't want to see
Full of routine and me wanting to improvise
Chorus 1
Painting the wall and his feet blue
Dancing leaves his mark to meet us with the cup of tea
I listen to her and travel better, I let go and accompany her
Verse 3
Now I'm back where I started
Face the painting that I also painted
A rainy day in which I left
Drive by your ideas and desire to surprise
Chorus 2
Painting the wall and his feet blue
Dancing leaves his mark to meet us with the cup of tea
I listen to her and travel better, I let go and accompany her
Bridge
Now I'm back where I started
Face the painting that I also painted
A rainy day in which I left
Drive by your ideas and desire to surprise
Desire to surprise
Hmm ai ai ai ai ai, sing
Hm ai ai ai ai the day

"Nada Que Esperar" is a rainy-afternoon song. Salvador Sobral opens with "Ya no tengo nada que esperar" (I have nothing left to wait for), and it sounds less like despair and more like relief: he is sitting with "la lluvia mientras tomo un té" (the rain while I drink a tea), accepting that "hay cosas que no se pueden predecir" (there are things you can't predict).

The trouble is routine. The same cup he has tasted before, notes on a piece of paper he didn't want to read, days "llenas de rutina y yo queriendo improvisar" (full of routine, and me wanting to improvise). Then someone arrives and starts "pintando la pared y de azul sus pies" (painting the wall, her feet blue), dancing and leaving footprints. It is a lovely, slightly silly image, and it is the turning point: he lets go and follows her.

Two phrases worth learning: "me suelto los cabos" literally means "I untie the ropes", like a boat leaving the dock, so it means letting yourself go. And "me dejé llevar" (I let myself be carried away) is an everyday way to say you went with the flow. By the end he is back "a donde empecé" (where I started), looking at a painting he helped make. The "ai ai ai" outro is just him singing for the joy of it.
