Fou À Lier Lyrics in English Feu! Chatterton

Below, I translated the lyrics of the song Fou À Lier by Feu! Chatterton from French to English.
I think about it all the time
And to make it pass, it passes
I self-medicate
I swallow, I swallow
Sh*tty ecstas
And I tell myself that
I'm fine
And when everything goes to h*ll
I make a run for it
So that at my temples
My pulse slows down
That the voices fall silent
After the storm
I float above my hauntings
Above the fear of going mad
Fit to be tied
Hammer-crazy like the sharks here
That I’ve got in my gourd
At the bottom of the jar
Cracked
Yeah I’m scared I’ll end up nuts
Fit to be tied
Hammer-crazy like the sharks here
Are these low-cost tickets
To some tropical skies
Multicolored tabs
So the Gods cool off
In the discotheque
Palm trees grow that
Crocodiles dock at
Let’s drop by parachute
Into this endless paradise!
Thought owns lands
Unseen by satellite radars
Is this island real here
Abandoned?
Or else in my head
A reef full of sirens
Who say that I’m crazy
Fit to be tied
Hammer-crazy like the sharks here
That I’ve got in my gourd
A tiny grain
Caffeinated
They say that I’m crazy
Fit to be tied
Hammer-crazy like the sharks here
Are these low-cost tickets
To some tropical skies
but where am I
And who are these people
Stringing pearls on the necks
Of other barefoot ones
Yeah yeah but where am I
And who are these people
Stringing pearls on the necks
Of other barefoot ones
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Quick, I court
The local girls
String pearls on the necks
Ooooh!
Quick, I court
The local girls
String pearls on the neck
Of other vahinés

SONG MEANING

In Fou À Lier (literally “crazy enough to be tied up”), Feu! Chatterton lets us ride the roller-coaster inside a restless mind. The narrator drowns intrusive thoughts in “ecstas merdiques,” hoping the cheap pills will quiet the pounding in his temples. Over a feverish groove, he flees reality, drifts above his own fears and hears the chorus whisper that he might be fou à lier — mad as a hatter — while imaginary sharks circle in the fishbowl of his skull.

The chemical escape opens a vivid hallucination: low-cost tickets to tropical skies, neon palms sprouting in a nightclub, crocodiles gliding between the dancers. He courts local girls, strings pearls on sun-kissed necks, yet keeps asking Where am I? Who are these people? The song swings between euphoric fantasy and creeping paranoia, capturing the modern urge to medicate our anxieties, party them away and chase exotic dreams that may only exist inside a cracked mind.
