Already on Karelia's hills the tree leafs out
Already Karelia's birch groves thicken
The cuckoo calls there, it is spring
Take my bottomless longing there
I know your hills, your mountain range
Your slash-and-burn smokes slumber at night
Your darkest forests' ancient trees
Your straits, the mouths of the fjords, are blue in the distance
There often my journey was aimless
Through the forests, through spruce thickets, I walked
I stood bareheaded on the hills
Where I saw beautiful Karelia before me
Hail, forest, hail, mountain
Hail, prince of the forest!
Here is your proud, young son
He steps forth, full of strength
Like the fierce wind of the fells
I want to be a son of the forest
A hero of the rugged spruce forest
On Tapio's field
I wrestle with the bear
Let the world be left to oblivion
Wonderful is the peace here
Valiant is the battle
A storm rages, the forest roars
The long one strikes fire
A spruce falls with a crash
I want to be a son of the forest
A hero of the rugged spruce forest
On Tapio's field
I wrestle with the bear
Let the world be left to oblivion
