tortura — torture

Tortura is a powerful word that literally translates to "torture". While it can describe physical pain, in this song, it's used to express extreme emotional agony.

Shakira sings, "Ay, amor, fue una tortura perderte" (Oh, love, it was torture losing you), making it the central theme of this passionate and dramatic breakup song. It's a perfect example of how Spanish uses strong vocabulary to convey deep feelings, making the heartbreak feel incredibly real and intense.

La Tortura plays out like an intense, dramatic argument between two ex-lovers who cannot seem to close the door on each other. Colombian superstar Shakira teams up with Spanish singer Alejandro Sanz to tell both sides of a messy breakup. Sanz plays the cheating partner desperately begging for a second chance, offering smooth excuses like "Yo sé que no he sido un santo / Pero lo puedo arreglar amor" ("I know I haven't been a saint / But I can fix it, love"). He even has the nerve to ask for weekends off with the cheeky line "De lunes a viernes tienes mi amor / Déjame el sábado a mi que es mejor" ("Monday to Friday you have my love / Leave Saturday for me, it's better"). Both admit that losing each other felt like true torture ("fue una tortura perderte"), but that mutual pain is not enough to fix what is broken.

Shakira isn't buying his remorse for a second. She points out his fake apologies with "lloras con los ojos secos" ("you cry with dry eyes") while he is still talking about the other woman. To shut down his smooth talk, she throws classic Spanish idioms right back at him. She snaps, "A otro perro con ese hueso y nos decimos adiós", which literally translates to "to another dog with that bone," the Spanish equivalent of saying "go sell that story to someone else." She also declares that asking him for loyalty is like asking elm trees to produce pears ("pedir a los olmos que entreguen peras") or throwing pearls to pigs. By the end, she puts her foot down: he can keep crying, but she is officially done wasting her own tears on him.

Shakira signed to Sony Music Colombia at thirteen, and her debut album Magia sold about 1,200 copies in Colombia. Born in Barranquilla in 1977 to a family of Lebanese, Catalan and Colombian descent, she was belly dancing by four, after hearing Arabic drumming at a Middle Eastern restaurant near home, and she has written or co-written most of what she records.

The breakthrough came with Pies Descalzos (1995) and its single "Estoy Aquí", and ¿Dónde Están los Ladrones? (1998) followed with "Ciega, Sordomuda" and "Ojos Así". She moved into English on Laundry Service (2001), whose "Whenever, Wherever" was released in Spanish as "Suerte", then topped the US Hot 100 in 2006 with "Hips Don’t Lie", featuring Wyclef Jean. "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)", recorded with the South African band Freshlyground, was the official song of the 2010 World Cup. Her 2023 session with Argentine producer Bizarrap won Latin Grammy Song of the Year, and Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran took Best Latin Pop Album at the 2025 Grammys, her fourth Grammy next to fifteen Latin Grammys.
