Schelpen translates to "shells". It's a charming and somewhat whimsical word that evokes images of the seaside and collecting treasures.
In the song, Ronnie carries "de schelpen uit zijn la" (the shells from his drawer) in his bag. This detail suggests a connection to memories, perhaps from a past trip or a cherished collection, hinting at a deeper emotional journey as Ronnie heads home and leaves a difficult period behind.
Ronnie is coming home, and Spinvis tells you so entirely through small ordinary things: a cassette and some shells packed into a bag, the holes in the wall, a poster of Paris, soup at twelve and television all day long. He never says where Ronnie has been, but "Het ging een tijdje slecht, maar dat is nou voorbij" ("things went badly for a while, but that is over now") and "Als je met tellen bent gestopt" ("when you have stopped counting") quietly point at a long stay somewhere Ronnie counted the days.
What makes the song so moving is how gently it turns that release into light. The shadow that used to call itself Ronnie was somebody else, the ghost is out of his head, and when the bus finally stops the moon will be made of silver and it will be summer forever in the house where Ronnie lives. It is a song about a second chance, sung in the plainest words available.
Spinvis is the one man band of Dutch singer songwriter Erik de Jong, born in 1961 and long based in Nieuwegein, just outside Utrecht in the Netherlands. He studied composition in Amsterdam and spent years working night shifts sorting mail, recording songs in his attic in whatever time was left.
He was already 41 when his self titled debut arrived in 2002, with almost every instrument played by himself. Dutch critics loved it, the album went gold, and the magazine Oor later named it the best Dutch record of the century. In 2004 he won the Annie M.G. Schmidt prize for the best theatre song of the year. His music mixes fragile, almost spoken vocals with tape loops and toy instruments, and his lyrics are loved for finding something enormous inside very small everyday details.
