Diepte literally means "depth". It's a powerful and evocative word that immediately suggests something profound, a difficult situation, or a deep emotional state.
In the context of the song, it's used both literally and metaphorically. The line "Hier in de diepte hoor ik steeds maar weer je naam" (Here in the depth I keep hearing your name) implies being in a dark, low place, perhaps emotionally or mentally. It's also the title of the song, making it central to its theme of navigating profound sadness and longing.
“De Diepte”, which translates to “The Depth”, dives straight into the heart of that heavy, rainy-day feeling when life seems stuck and every dream feels out of reach. S10 paints a vivid scene of endless showers, hiding under tables, and biting her tongue just to cope. In this emotional storm, one name keeps echoing in the darkness, reminding her, and us, that love can be both an anchor and a lifeline.
Beneath the surface, the song is a confession of vulnerability and fierce attachment. S10 admits she is "deep" in her worries, yet refuses to let go of the person who gives her hope. The repeated plea not to “let you go” turns the track into an anthem for anyone clutching onto a relationship as their last source of light. With its haunting melody and raw lyrics, “De Diepte” invites listeners to embrace their own depths, believe that someone will find them there, and trust that even the darkest nights eventually break into dawn.
S10 is the stage name of Stien den Hollander, a Dutch singer, rapper and songwriter born in 2000 in the small village of Abbekerk, in the north of the Netherlands. She started making music as a teenager and signed to the hip hop label Noah's Ark in 2017.
Her sound blends pop, hip hop and electronic music, and she is known for raw, honest lyrics that often deal with personal struggles, including her own mental health. Her debut album Snowsniper won a prestigious Edison Award in the Netherlands. In 2022 she represented her country at the Eurovision Song Contest in Turin with this song, De Diepte, the first Dutch entry sung in Dutch since 2010, finishing in a strong eleventh place.
