Untergang — downfall / demise

Untergang translates to "downfall" or "demise". It's a strong and dramatic word that evokes a sense of ruin or collapse.

In the context of the song, the lyrics state, "Es ist der Untergang, der uns so gut gefÀllt" (It's the downfall that we like so much). This suggests a fascination with destructive relationships or situations, where the very act of falling apart is what draws the individuals together. It's a captivating and somewhat dark concept that makes the word stand out.

Have you ever felt like a sad song was making your breakup even sadder? That's the hilarious and heartfelt idea behind this track. The singer is in a complicated relationship with someone who calls them late at night, asking for forgiveness and wondering if they can change. Instead of just being angry at their partner, the singer points the finger at a surprising target: the British musician James Blake.

Why James Blake? Because his famously melancholic music has become the soundtrack to their drama. The singer complains that all of Blake's songs are about missing someone and distance, which only makes their own painful situation worse. They find themselves crying on the phone to his music, romanticizing their own sadness. In a clever twist, the singer suggests this shared love for tragic music might be the very thing that keeps their difficult relationship going, admitting, "It's the downfall that we like so much."

Provinz are a German indie-pop band from Vogt, a small town near Ravensburg in southern Germany. Founded in 2017, the group is led by cousins Vincent Waizenegger on vocals and guitar and Robin Schmid on vocals and keyboards, with bassist Moritz Bösing and drummer Leon Sennewald completing the lineup.

Known for their yearning, hymn-like songs and heartfelt German lyrics, Provinz broke through with their 2020 debut album and reached number two on the German charts with their second album, also titled Zorn & Liebe, in 2022.

On this track they team up with Nina Chuba, one of Germany's biggest pop stars, who rose to fame with her viral hit "Wildberry Lillet." Her voice trades off with Provinz across the song, giving the duet its push and pull between anger and love.
