baladinminstrel / troubadour / wanderer

Baladin is a beautiful and somewhat rare French word that evokes a sense of romantic wandering and artistic expression. It translates to 'minstrel', 'troubadour', or 'wanderer'.

In the song, Garou sings "À mes idées de baladin" (To my minstrel's ideas). This word paints a picture of a free-spirited, perhaps poetic, individual, adding a unique and intriguing layer to the singer's self-reflection within this heartfelt dedication.

Raise your glass—Garou is making a heartfelt toast in “À Toi”. The song unfolds like a series of cheers to you, me, and finally us. He lovingly salutes every facet of his partner: her beauty, her little-girl heart, even her “slightly artificial” sweet words. Then he turns the spotlight on himself, confessing his own flaws, tempers, and secrets. By shifting the refrain from toi to moi, Garou shows that real love embraces both the polished and the imperfect sides of each person.

The final toast celebrates nous—the shared memories they will create, the future child who will be “both you and me,” and the universal community of lovers everywhere. It is a jubilant hymn to life, love, and second chances, inviting listeners to celebrate their own relationships with the same joyous, inclusive spirit.

Garou, born Pierre Garand in 1972 in Sherbrooke, Quebec, is one of Canada's best loved French-language singers. He rose to fame in 1998 playing Quasimodo in the smash-hit musical Notre-Dame de Paris, and his warm, gravelly voice quickly made him a star across the French-speaking world.

His debut album Seul (2000) sold hundreds of thousands of copies and gave us this duet with his fellow Quebecer Celine Dion. Since then Garou has sold more than five million records, sung in both French and English, and served as a coach on The Voice in France. Sous le vent remains one of his signature songs and reached number one in France.
