"4422" is the quietest moment on Drake's More Life, and Drake does not sing a word of it. The whole track belongs to British singer Sampha, whose voice carries it from start to finish over a slow, spacious beat.
The song is about being worn down by someone who keeps promising to be different. "You say you changed but you never change up" is the line the whole thing turns on: the promise arrives, the behaviour does not. Sampha sings about someone who builds something up only to break it "halfway through", so the damage always lands just after you have started to believe again.
The repeated "44, 22" and "just make the call" read like a phone number he keeps waiting on. It is the sound of hoping the other person will finally reach out, while knowing what the call will actually be.
The last verse turns inward and gets honest. "I know I fear trust, I know I fear fear too much" admits that the problem is not only the other person. Then "outer space, pearly gates" lifts the whole thing up to something much bigger than one relationship, before the opening line comes back: he is still running, and still cannot run away.
