refémhostage

Refém translates to "hostage". It's a striking and intense word that immediately grabs attention, as it's not commonly found in romantic song lyrics.

In "Refém," Dilsinho uses this word metaphorically to describe being held captive by an illicit love. The singer feels trapped and manipulated by his lover's "chantagens" (blackmail), making him a "refém" of their complicated and forbidden relationship. This powerful imagery makes the word particularly memorable and intriguing.

"Refém" is about a secret, forbidden love affair that starts as something exciting and ends up trapping the narrator.

He describes falling for someone suddenly, comparing it to a Romeo-and-Juliet kind of passion, with stolen moments in a movie theater and a cheap motel room. What began as thrilling soon leaves him hurt and always making excuses to hide the marks the affair leaves behind.

In the chorus he pushes back against being blackmailed over it. He is honest that there is no real betrayal in his mind, because his partner always knew about the other relationship, and he refuses to let anyone use the secret to hold him hostage.

Dilsinho (born Dilson Scher Neto in 1992) is a Brazilian singer-songwriter from Rio de Janeiro, raised on the Ilha do Governador. He got his first guitar from his father at age 13 and started out playing in local bars.

He began his career in 2009 with the band Para de Kaô, and before going solo he wrote songs recorded by other pagode and samba artists, including Thiaguinho, Alexandre Pires, and Sorriso Maroto. He launched his own solo career in 2014.

Known for blending pop, hip hop, and funk carioca into a style he calls "pagode diferentão," Dilsinho is one of the most streamed pagode artists in Brazil, and his hit "Péssimo Negócio" was the most-played song on Brazilian radio in 2019.
