"Bohío" is Vicente García standing outside the house he grew up in and realizing it isn't his anymore. He opens right before dawn: "Es más oscuro cuando ya va hacerse claro" (It's darker when it's about to get light), and the chorus never really develops into anything more complicated than "Al bohío, oh" (To the bohío, oh), repeated until it stops sounding like a place name and starts sounding like a wound.
The second verse is where the song stops being personal and gets specific about what changed. The hammock is gone, the person who used to sit in it is gone, and then he says it outright: "Que no parecen ni araguaco y macori" (Who don't even look like Arawak and Macorix), naming the island's original people by name. A bohío is the thatched-roof house Taíno families lived in before colonization, so García is doing two things in the same three minutes: missing one specific person, and mourning a stretch of Dominican coastline that got sold and rebuilt out from under the people who were there first. He recorded this from the north coast, where that trade is still happening, which is probably why the song never bothers dressing the loss up.
