contoneando — swaying/wiggling

Contoneando comes from the verb contonear, which means to sway or wiggle one's hips or body in a graceful, often sensual, way. It's a vivid and descriptive word that paints a clear picture of movement.

In the context of "Las Caleñas Son Como Las Flores," the lyrics describe the women of Cali "contoneando llevan su cintura" (swaying their waists). This word perfectly captures the elegant and rhythmic way the women move, likening it to the swaying of sugarcane fields, which is a central image in the song.

The whole song is one compliment, held up for four minutes of Cali salsa. "Las caleñas son como las flores" (Cali girls are like flowers), and the comparison keeps unfolding: they walk the pavements, they move their hips "Como los cañaverales" (like the sugar-cane fields), which is a very Valle del Cauca thing to compare anyone to. The only line with a condition attached is "Si no están correspondidas" (unless it is returned). They do not hand their love over for free.

Then the chorus stops describing and starts listing. "Las sencillas son" (the simple ones are), "Las gorditas son" (the chubby ones are), "Las flaquitas son" (the skinny ones are), each one left hanging so the coro can finish the sentence with the flowers line. Nobody gets left off the list, which is the joke and also the point. By the closing section the singer has abandoned structure altogether and is reeling off places and plans, down to "A Cali, Chipichape Jumbo" (to Cali, Chipichape, Jumbo), the kind of name-dropping that only lands if you know the city. "Ay qué rico, qué bueno" (oh so good, so nice) is about as much analysis as the song asks for.

The Latin Brothers are a salsa band from Colombia. They started making music in the 1970s, becoming a part of the country's salsa movement.
