vestirán santos — they will remain spinsters

Vestir santos literally translates to "to dress saints". It's a colorful Spanish idiom used to describe a woman who remains a spinster or an old maid, supposedly because her main task becomes dressing the statues of saints in the church.

In the song, Shakira critiques societal pressure by singing that women who don't marry before thirty will be left to vestirán santos, highlighting the traditional expectation for women to marry young. It's a fantastic, culturally rich phrase that captures the song's rebellious spirit.

Colombian pop star Shakira takes us on a whirlwind tour of human history to poke fun at modern society's ridiculous rules. She starts all the way back with humanity running around naked, surviving dinosaurs, and biting the forbidden apple in Eden. Back then, humans were part of an ancient race with "pies descalzos y de sueños blancos" (bare feet and white dreams). But after all those centuries of chaos and freedom, we built an overly organized world with exact measurements, rigid schedules, and zero room for error. Shakira openly admits she is "un caos completo" (a complete mess) who cannot keep up with all the numbers and routines, calling out how absurd it is that we traded our freedom for modern misery.

The most hilarious and sharp part of the track is the laundry list of social expectations we are forced to obey. Shakira mocks everyday etiquette: wear your shoes, don't chew loudly at the table, wear pantyhose, put on a tie for parties, and dance the waltz properly at your fifteenth birthday. She takes aim at traditional gossip and gender pressure, warning that women must marry before thirty or "vestirán santos" (dress saints, a classic idiom meaning to end up an old maid). She points out that people obsess over these trivial rules while ignoring the big picture, noting with great sarcasm that "no te importó un pepino tu destino" (you didn't give a damn about your destiny, using "importar un pepino"—literally 'to matter a cucumber'). It is a clever, catchy plea to kick off your tight shoes and embrace a bit of human messiness.

Shakira signed to Sony Music Colombia at thirteen, and her debut album Magia sold about 1,200 copies in Colombia. Born in Barranquilla in 1977 to a family of Lebanese, Catalan and Colombian descent, she was belly dancing by four, after hearing Arabic drumming at a Middle Eastern restaurant near home, and she has written or co-written most of what she records.

The breakthrough came with Pies Descalzos (1995) and its single "Estoy Aquí", and ¿Dónde Están los Ladrones? (1998) followed with "Ciega, Sordomuda" and "Ojos Así". She moved into English on Laundry Service (2001), whose "Whenever, Wherever" was released in Spanish as "Suerte", then topped the US Hot 100 in 2006 with "Hips Don’t Lie", featuring Wyclef Jean. "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)", recorded with the South African band Freshlyground, was the official song of the 2010 World Cup. Her 2023 session with Argentine producer Bizarrap won Latin Grammy Song of the Year, and Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran took Best Latin Pop Album at the 2025 Grammys, her fourth Grammy next to fifteen Latin Grammys.
