estrellasyou crash

Estrellas is a fantastic example of wordplay in Spanish. While it most commonly means "stars" as a noun, here it's used as a conjugated form of the verb estrellarse, which means "to crash".

Sebastián Yatra sings, "Conmigo tú te estrellas, como un loco te salvo" (With me you crash, and like a madman I save you). This clever line plays on the song's celestial theme of stars and planets while describing a relationship that is both passionate and dangerously exciting.

Have you ever felt like you're in a relationship where the other person is always looking for something else? That's the heart of Sebastian Yatra's song "Basicamente". He uses this huge, cosmic metaphor to talk about a very down-to-earth problem. He straight up says, "Básicamente aquí estamos los dos / La luna soy yo, el planeta eres tú" (Basically, here we are, the two of us / I am the moon, you are the planet). He's the moon, and his partner is a planet who keeps "girando, buscando una luz" (spinning, looking for a light), which seems to be another person, the sun.

What's so clever is how he describes this impossible situation. There's so much attraction, or "gravedad" (gravity), that they can't stay away from each other, even though it's a mess. The planet needs the moon's light, but is always tempted by the sun. The narrator knows this is a bad cycle, saying, "Lo intentamos y está mal" (We try and it's wrong), because his partner can't commit. It's a song about being stuck in someone's orbit, knowing you're not the only star in their sky.

Sebastián Yatra, born Sebastián Obando Giraldo in Medellín, Colombia on October 15, 1994, is a vibrant singer, songwriter, and stage actor celebrated for his blend of romantic Latin pop and energetic reggaeton. Raised primarily in Miami, Yatra began singing young and gained fame in 2016 with his hit "Traicionera," a track that launched his international career.

His music is known for its heartfelt lyrics that artfully mix traditional balladry with modern urban beats. Yatra has released three studio albums, including the Grammy-nominated Fantasía, and has collaborated with notable artists such as Carlos Vives, Daddy Yankee, and the Jonas Brothers. In 2024, he expanded his artistic reach by making his Broadway debut in the musical Chicago as Billy Flynn.
