Intimidad translates directly to "intimacy." It's a word that immediately suggests a deeper, more personal connection, going beyond a casual encounter.
In Ricky Martin's song, the repeated phrase "dime que me quieres en la intimidad" (tell me you love me in intimacy) elevates the desire from a simple declaration of love to a longing for a profound, private bond. It hints at a passionate and exclusive relationship, making it a very enticing word in a romantic context.
“Dime Que Me Quieres” turns desire into a driving metaphor before the first verse ends. Ricky Martin opens with "Enciende tu motor, yo soy tu dirección" [Turn on your engine, I'm your direction], then pushes past every caution light: "Las calles de mi amor quitaron el stop" [The streets of my love took down the stop sign]. Nothing about this song plays it safe.
The chorus drops the car entirely and just asks, plainly: "Ven y ven y ven y dime que me quieres en la intimidad" [Come and come and come and tell me you love me in private], "Sabes que me puedes dominar" [You know you can dominate me]. He isn't after a public declaration, only a whispered one, and he's handing over control in the same breath. Later he calls his partner "eres mi cara y cruz" [you're my heads and my tails], the two sides of one coin, before the song settles on its plainest line of all: "Mi corazón es para ti" [My heart is for you].
Ricky Martin was turned down by Menudo twice for being too short. The third audition worked, and in 1984 Enrique Martín Morales joined the Puerto Rican boy band at twelve, staying past his age-mandated retirement until July 1989. Two solo ballad albums followed, Ricky Martin (1991) and Me Amarás (1993), before he changed direction.
A Medio Vivir (1995) carried "María", his first hit well beyond Latin America, and Vuelve (1998) carried "La Copa de la Vida", the official song of that year's World Cup in France. He sang it at the 1999 Grammy Awards, where Vuelve took Best Latin Pop Performance, and that spring "Livin' la Vida Loca" spent five weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 as the lead single from his first English-language album. He has gone on recording in Spanish throughout: Almas del Silencio (2003), and A Quien Quiera Escuchar (2015), which won Best Latin Pop Album. He came out publicly in 2010, and his foundation campaigns against human trafficking.
