Canines refers to the pointed teeth located between the incisors and premolars, often associated with tearing food or, metaphorically, with aggression.
In the song, the line "Range tes canines" (Put away your canines) is a powerful and evocative metaphor. It's not a literal command to a dog, but rather a plea to Pauline to stop her predatory or hurtful behavior towards the narrator's love interest, implying she's being aggressive or possessive like a predator.
Picture the school playground: our narrator has admired Pauline from afar since they were little. Pauline always seemed taller, prettier, effortlessly cool, surrounded by a clique of glamorous girls. Meanwhile the storyteller felt invisible, watching every boy’s gaze glide past her to the magnetic Pauline. This early contrast plants the seed of both fascination and quiet jealousy that runs through the song.
Fast-forward to young adulthood and the stakes are higher. The narrator has finally found a boy who sees her, who makes her heart race… but Pauline’s charm strikes again. She can snap her fingers, turn this boy into a “circus dog,” and then discard him without a second thought. The song becomes a heartfelt plea: “Leave him to me, let someone else taste happiness for once.” Under the catchy melody, Pomme explores deep insecurities, the pain of comparison, and the fear of losing love to someone who seems impossibly perfect yet unknowingly destructive. It is a bittersweet ode to self-doubt, beauty standards, and the hope that kindness will triumph over casual cruelty.
Pomme is the stage name of Claire Pommet, a singer and songwriter born in 1996 near Lyon, France. She began solfège lessons at six and sang in a children's choir before turning to guitar, drawing early on chanson artists like Michel Polnareff that her father played around the house. She played her first Paris show at La Boule Noire in 2017, the same year she released her debut album, À peu près, which reached the French charts.
Her second album, Les failles, came out in 2019 and gave her a French top ten album. She has won two Victoires de la Musique, in 2020 and 2021, and followed with the albums Consolation, En cavale, and Saisons. In 2024 she recorded music with Stromae for Netflix's animated series Arcane. She married Quebecois singer Safia Nolin in 2022, after the two first met and dated back in 2016.
