bélica — warlike / bellicose

Bélica is the feminine form of bélico, which literally translates to "warlike" or "bellicose". While it sounds like a formal word you'd find in a history book, it has become a key piece of modern slang in Mexican music.

In this song, Peso Pluma uses it to describe a certain style and attitude associated with his music genre, corridos bélicos. When he sings "Pura encapuchada bélica" (purely 'bélica' hooded girls), he's describing women who are bold, tough, and part of an edgy, assertive culture. It’s a perfect example of how a classic word can take on a new, powerful meaning in pop culture.

Mexican artist Peso Pluma teams up with Gabito Ballesteros and Junior H for "LADY GAGA," a corrido tumbado that flexes extreme wealth, private parties, and complete excess. The title itself comes from a high-end limited edition champagne named in the opening line: "Dom Pérignon, Lady Gaga". The track jumps straight into a hedonistic lifestyle full of yacht trips, designer Cartier watches, and luxury cars like Lamborghinis and Mercedes. Even video games get pulled into the flex, with the line "Viviendo en el San Andrés, pero de a deberas" ("Living in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, but for real"), comparing their fast-paced life of cash and fast rides to an actual action video game.

The lyrics mix street slang with high-roller party habits. Phrases like "sin Yolanda" play on Mexican rhyming slang (sin Yolanda, Maricarmen, meaning "no crying / don't worry about the cost") while they blow through stacks of cash ("tronamos las pacas"). Even with influencers everywhere on private islands, the scene stays strictly off social media: "Ninguna sube nada al Instagram / SĂłlo disfrutan" ("No one posts anything on Instagram / They just enjoy"). From flying to Japan just for fresh seafood to smoking shisha in Egypt, every verse doubles down on living fast with no price tag in mind.

Hassan Emilio Kabande Laija was born in Zapopan, Jalisco in 1999, grew up in Guadalajara, and taught himself guitar at fifteen off YouTube tutorials. As Peso Pluma he sings corridos tumbados: Sinaloan sierreño guitars underneath, the cadence and swagger of hip hop on top. His voice is a thin nasal rasp nobody would call pretty, and in 2023 it made him the fifth most-streamed artist on Spotify worldwide.

He arrived through features, "El Belicón" with Raúl Vega and then "AMG" and "PRC" with Natanael Cano, before "Ella Baila Sola" with Eslabón Armado reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2023, the first regional Mexican song ever inside that top 10. Génesis won Best Música Mexicana Album at the 2024 Grammys, and the 24-track double album Éxodo followed with Cardi B, Quavo and Rich the Kid along for the urbano half. He runs his own label, Double P Records, and closed 2025 with Dinastía, a joint album with his cousin Tito Double P that went straight to No. 1 on Top Latin Albums and filled 30 US arenas in 2026, Madison Square Garden included.
