zerfälltdecays / falls apart

zerfällt is a powerful German verb meaning 'to decay', 'to disintegrate', or 'to fall apart'. It paints a very strong and vivid picture of something breaking down over time or collapsing suddenly.

In the song, Nena uses it poetically to describe the fleeting nature of life. She sings of "Der Moment in dem es zerfällt" (The moment in which it falls apart), capturing the bittersweet idea that every beautiful moment also holds the potential for its own end. This evocative word perfectly expresses the song's theme of living in the now.

Genau Jetzt (which means Exactly Now) is Nena’s vibrant reminder that life’s perfect timing is rarely clear. With the playful refrain “Vielleicht ist es zu früh, vielleicht ist es zu spät, vielleicht ist es genau jetzt” (Maybe it’s too early, maybe it’s too late, maybe it’s right now), she captures that jittery moment when we wonder whether to leap, hold back, or walk away. The song flashes through snapshots of two people who can be united as one heart or split into two opinions, showing how quickly Hallo can flip to Bye bye.

Rather than giving a tidy answer, Nena celebrates uncertainty: tomorrow is unknown, so choose right now. Trip and fall? Get up and keep running. Friendships can blossom or fade in a heartbeat, and that fragile instant is where possibility lives. Packed with upbeat energy and a seize-the-day spirit, the track urges listeners to trust the present moment, breathe it in, and dance forward before doubt says it’s too late.

Nena is the stage name of Gabriele Susanne Kerner, a German singer born on 24 March 1960 in Hagen, West Germany. She rose to fame in the early 1980s as the front woman of the band Nena, one of the defining acts of the Neue Deutsche Welle (German New Wave) movement.

The band's 1983 single "99 Luftballons" became a number one hit in West Germany and a worldwide success, topping the UK charts and reaching number two in the United States. To this day it remains the most successful German language song in international pop history. After the band split, Nena went on to a long and popular solo career, and she is still one of Germany's best loved pop artists.
