Centímetro means “centimeter,” a small unit of measurement. In the song, the singer says there is only “un centímetro entre nosotros” (“one centimeter between us”), turning a precise measurement into a vivid image of intense closeness and romantic tension.
Morat’s “Me Mata” is a playful song about wanting to get closer to someone at a party, while feeling nervous about saying what you really mean. The singer is only “un centímetro entre nosotros” [one centimeter between us], yet that tiny space feels enormous. He says, “Me-me-me-me-me-me mata” [it-it-it-it-it-it kills me] when he sees the person’s eyes, watches them dance, or hears their accent. In Spanish, “me mata” does not mean literal death here. It means something affects him so strongly that he can hardly handle it. The repeated, broken phrase sounds like his thoughts are stumbling too.
He does not want the night to end because the distance between them might remain. He admits, “No me pienso ir de aquí si no te vas conmigo” [I do not plan to leave here if you do not leave with me], and even imagines taking this person to a deserted island. That is a funny, wonderfully excessive way to say, “I only want you.” The real problem is not simply standing face to face. It is “vivir con este espacio entre los dos” [living with this space between us]. As the party continues, the two of them make him tremble and lose control, so he asks, “Dime lo que va a pasar” [tell me what is going to happen].
The four of Morat met at school in Bogotá, Colombia, and were playing as Malta by late 2011, renamed before the first record. Juan Pablo Isaza sings and plays guitar, Juan Pablo Villamil plays the banjo that gives their pop its country tilt, and the Vargas brothers hold the bottom end, Simón on bass and Martín on percussion.
They broke out in 2015, first on Paulina Rubio's "Mi nuevo vicio" and then with their own "Cómo te atreves". Sobre el amor y sus efectos secundarios (2016) led to Balas perdidas (2018), a number one in Spain and Mexico with "Besos en guerra" alongside Juanes plus "No se va", which Grupo Frontera's 2022 cover turned into their most-streamed song. ¿A dónde vamos? (2021) and Si ayer fuera hoy (2022) followed, then Ya es mañana (2025), their first Latin Grammy winner, for Best Pop/Rock Album. Its tour opened with six nights at Bogotá's Movistar Arena in August 2026, and a May 2026 duet with Silvestre Dangond, "Lo poco que yo quiero", previews a second volume.
