Ileso translates to "unscathed" or "unharmed". It's a powerful word that implies surviving a dangerous situation, like a battle, without any injury.
In "Besos en Guerra" (Kisses in War), the singer uses this war metaphor for love. He sings, "Y tĂş nunca juraste que saldrĂa ileso" (And you never swore that I would come out unscathed), poetically admitting he knew from the start that this risky love affair would likely leave him with a broken heart.
Imagine walking right into a battlefield because you just cannot resist the danger. That is the exact mood Colombian band Morat and superstar Juanes bring in this upbeat folk-pop track. The narrator knows this romance is completely hazardous. Instead of running away, he dives straight in, declaring that even if a soldier gets warned, "si está enamorado en guerra morirá" ("if he is in love, he will die in war"). The song treats romance like an armed conflict where "dos besos son demasiado y un beso no bastará" ("two kisses are too much, and one kiss will not be enough"). It is dramatic, self-aware, and completely hooked on the thrill.
What makes the lyrics fun is how openly unrepentant he is about the whole mess. He tells his love interest to stop apologizing because he knew what he signed up for from day one. He admits that "tus promesas riman con dolor" ("your promises rhyme with pain") and calls her an expert at stealing his heartbeats, yet he proudly sings "no me arrepiento" ("I do not regret it"). The four of Morat met at school in Bogotá, Colombia, and were playing as Malta by late 2011, renamed before the first record. Juan Pablo Isaza sings and plays guitar, Juan Pablo Villamil plays the banjo that gives their pop its country tilt, and the Vargas brothers hold the bottom end, SimĂłn on bass and MartĂn on percussion.
