Al aire literally translates to "on the air". It's a common phrase in Spanish used to describe something being broadcast live, especially on the radio or television.
This phrase is the heart of the song's story. The singer is too shy to talk to his crush, so he calls a radio station to send his "besos al aire" (kisses on the air), hoping she's listening. It’s a sweet, poetic phrase that captures a grand romantic gesture from afar.
Ever been so nervous to talk to your crush that you'd rather broadcast your feelings to thousands of strangers? That is exactly the bold, slightly desperate move Colombian band Morat pulls in "Al Aire". The singer met a girl through a mutual friend, lost touch with her ("por culpa del destino nunca más la vi" [because of destiny I never saw her again]), and completely froze up in person. Instead of confronting her directly ("Yo de frente no me atrevo ni a empezar esta conversación" [Face-to-face I don't even dare start this conversation]), he calls a live radio station, hoping she happens to be tuned in.
The entire track revolves around a clever double meaning with the phrase "al aire". In broadcasting, estar al aire means being live "on the air." At the same time, blowing a kiss into the sky is sending a kiss into the literal air ("besos al aire" [kisses into the air / kisses on the airwaves]). He even jokes that he will trade his brief moment in the public eye ("Quince minutos de fama" [Fifteen minutes of fame]) just to win one single minute by her side before she changes the channel.
The four of Morat met at school in Bogotá, Colombia, and were playing as Malta by late 2011, renamed before the first record. Juan Pablo Isaza sings and plays guitar, Juan Pablo Villamil plays the banjo that gives their pop its country tilt, and the Vargas brothers hold the bottom end, Simón on bass and Martín on percussion.
They broke out in 2015, first on Paulina Rubio's "Mi nuevo vicio" and then with their own "Cómo te atreves". Sobre el amor y sus efectos secundarios (2016) led to Balas perdidas (2018), a number one in Spain and Mexico with "Besos en guerra" alongside Juanes plus "No se va", which Grupo Frontera's 2022 cover turned into their most-streamed song. ¿A dónde vamos?
