Abbracciami is the imperative form of the verb abbracciare, meaning "to hug" or "to embrace". It's a direct and intimate command.
In the context of Mina's song "L'amore Vero" (True Love), this word is particularly poignant. The singer expresses deep vulnerability, stating "Che senza te son niente, abbracciami" (Because without you I am nothing, hug me). It's a powerful plea for comfort and reassurance, highlighting the depth of her emotional dependence and the central theme of enduring love.
In "L'amore Vero," which translates to "True Love," the singer explores the powerful and sometimes conflicting emotions of a deep romance. On one hand, she feels a love so profound that words can't do it justice. She tells her partner, "With words I wouldn't be able / To tell you what you are to me," and feels that without them, she is "nothing." When they are together, it feels as if time itself stands still.
On the other hand, this intense connection comes with a fear of loss. The singer admits she doesn't know how long their time together will last and stays awake at night worrying that her lover might one day leave. Despite this uncertainty, she holds on to the belief that what they have is special and eternal, repeating the song's central idea: "L'amore vero non finisce mai" (True love never ends).
Mina was born Anna Maria Mazzini in Busto Arsizio, Lombardy, in 1940 and grew up in Cremona, which is why Italians still call her "la Tigre di Cremona". She started out in 1958 singing rock and roll in clubs, and within a couple of years she was all over Italian radio and television, with a three-octave voice that could go from a whisper to a roar in one phrase.
She is known for songs like "Tintarella di luna", "Se telefonando", "Grande, grande, grande" and "Parole parole", her talking duet with Alberto Lupo. In 1978 she gave her last public concert at Bussoladomani in Versilia, recorded as "Mina Live '78", and then stopped performing live for good. She moved to Switzerland and kept releasing an album almost every year from the studio, including a best-selling duet album with Adriano Celentano in 1998, and she is the only artist to top the Italian album chart in every decade since the 1960s.
