soplido — a puff of air / a blow

Soplido means "a puff of air" or "a blow". It's a wonderfully specific and descriptive noun that you don't often hear in songs, making it a very memorable word to learn.

In "Vivir Sin Aire", the singer desperately wishes he could forget his love, singing "Cómo quisiera borrarte de un soplido" (How I wish I could erase you with a puff of air). This poetic line contrasts the small, effortless action of a soplido with the impossible task of erasing someone from your heart, creating a powerful and poignant image.

Mexican rock band Maná does not do subtle when it comes to heartbreak, and Vivir Sin Aire goes straight over the top. The singer compares surviving without his love to living without basic biological necessities: "Cómo quisiera / Poder vivir sin aire" (How I wish / I could live without air) and "Poder vivir sin agua" (To be able to live without water). He doubles down with nature metaphors, asking how a fish can swim without water, a bird fly without wings, or a flower grow without soil. His conclusion is pure drama: "Me estoy ahogando sin tu amor" (I am drowning without your love). It is desperate, melodramatic, and incredibly catchy.

By the end, he is utterly fed up with his own misery. He wants to toss this person into oblivion ("lanzarte al olvido"), lock them away in a drawer ("guardarte en un cajón"), and wipe them out with a single breath ("borrarte de un soplido"). He is so tired of hurting that he even wants to kill the very track he is singing: "Me encantaría matar esta canción" (I would love to kill this song). It is a wonderfully blunt way to admit that obsessing over someone is exhausting.
