cendrier des anges — ashtray of angels

Cendrier des anges is a beautifully poetic and surreal phrase that literally translates to "ashtray of angels". It's a standout line that you won't find in any other song.

In this melancholic ballad, Louane sings "J'ai déposé des cendres / Dans le cendrier des anges" (I left ashes / In the ashtray of angels). She uses this striking image to describe the end of a relationship. The love has burned out, leaving only ashes, and they are placed in a metaphorical, almost sacred, final resting place.

“Midi Sur Novembre” paints a cinematic moment at exactly midday in chilly November, when the low sun lingers outside a bedroom window while two lovers realise their story has quietly reached its final page. Louane and Julien Doré trade lines filled with vivid images — ashes in an angel’s ashtray, a silent desert of everyday life, the promise of the sea without the other — to show that the break-up is not a sudden storm but a calm, inevitable snowfall. The repeated English refrain “We’ll be fine, I guess” adds a bittersweet shrug, mixing hope with uncertainty, as if they are trying to convince themselves just as much as each other.

Underneath the gentle melody, the song balances resignation and optimism: hearts have already decided, yet the future might still hold warmth once this icy season passes. It is a tender reminder that endings can be soft, lunchtime sunlight can wait, and even in November’s coldest noon, you can whisper to yourself that you’ll be fine — or at least you guess so.

Louane was born Anne Peichert in 1996 in the Pas-de-Calais, in the north of France, and at sixteen she reached the semi-finals of The Voice: la plus belle voix. A year later she played Paula, the hearing daughter of a deaf farming family, in the film La Famille Bélier, and won the César for Most Promising Actress for the role.

Her debut album Chambre 12 (2015) went to number one in France and sold over three quarters of a million copies that year, carried by "Avenir", "Jour 1" and "Maman", a song written for her mother, who had died the year before. Louane (2017), Joie de vivre (2020), Sentiments (2022) and Solo (2024) followed, and in 2025 she represented France at Eurovision with a new song called "Maman", again about her mother, finishing seventh.
