Patán translates to "boor" or "lout," describing someone rude, uncultured, or ill-mannered. It's a colorful and somewhat informal word that isn't heard in every song, making it quite memorable.
In "Dime Que No," the lyrics playfully describe the dynamic between two lovers: "Yo loca de atar, tú un poco patán" (I'm crazy, you're a bit of a lout). This word choice adds a touch of humor and realism to their complicated relationship, suggesting that despite their flaws, there's an undeniable connection.
"Dime Que No" is a dare dressed up as a request. The narrator drags up a relationship she already admits was a mess — "Tú y yo, suena algo estúpido" ("You and I, sounds kinda stupid"), "Yo loca de atar, tú un poco patán" ("Me, crazy as hell, you a bit of a jerk") — and then asks her ex to deny that any of it stuck to him. "Dime que no" ("Tell me no"): tell me my memory leaves you alone at night, tell me "Que una ducha no enfría tu piel" ("That a shower doesn't cool your skin"). Each demand is built so that saying no would be the obvious lie, and the answer she is actually fishing for is "Yo he sido tu mejor error" ("I've been your best mistake").
Halfway through she turns the same accusation on herself, and the pronouns flip. She is with someone else and says so plainly — "Que estando feliz, amada y feliz" ("That being happy, loved, and content") — and it changes nothing: "Cada vez que suena el teléfono" ("Every time the phone rings") she still hopes it is him, and "Aún me hagas sentir así" ("You still make me feel this way"). By the last chorus she has stopped asking him to deny anything and simply lives with the contradiction — "Que por más que no tenga sentido" ("That even if it doesn't make sense"), the warmth is still there.
Jesse & Joy are a Mexican brother-and-sister pop duo from Mexico City. Jesse Huerta plays piano and guitar, while his younger sister Joy takes the lead vocals. The pair started writing songs together as teenagers and signed with Warner Music in 2005.
They released their debut album in 2006 and quickly became one of the biggest acts in Latin pop. Their song "¡Corre!," from the 2011 album ¿Con Quién Se Queda El Perro?, won Song of the Year and Record of the Year at the Latin Grammys. Jesse & Joy have since won six Latin Grammys in total, plus a Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album.
