Gato por liebre literally means "cat for a hare." It's a fantastic Spanish idiom for being tricked or deceived, like someone trying to pass off something inferior (a cat) as something more valuable (a hare).
In the song, it's part of a mother's warning to her daughter about people who might try to fool her in life and love. This clever phrase perfectly captures the song's central theme of suspicion and not taking things at face value.
Ever waited up for someone who was way too late coming home? This song is for you. It's a classic he-said-she-said argument set to a killer beat. She's at home, wide awake, and her mind is racing. It's 3 a.m., and he's still not back. She's thinking about what her mom always told her: "Hay quien te vende gato por liebre" (There are people who will sell you a cat for a hare), which is a great Spanish saying for being tricked. She's convinced he's cheating, singing, "Son las tres de la mañana y no has llegado / Sé que estás con alguien y lo estás negando" (It's three in the morning and you haven't arrived / I know you're with someone and you're denying it).
Then he finally strolls in, and the excuses begin! He asks why she's so suspicious and gives the ultimate alibi: "Yo solo estaba con mis amigos tomando tequila en la madrugada" (I was just with my friends drinking tequila in the early morning). He claims he was just "Pasándola bien" (having a good time). But the best part is when he says he lost track of time because when he looked at his watch, "Pero se paró" (But it stopped). A likely story! It's a fun, back-and-forth song about trust, suspicion, and a very, very late night.
