Monstros — Monsters

Monstros means 'monsters'. It's a captivating and evocative word that immediately draws attention, especially as it's also the title of the song.

In the context of the lyrics, 'monstros' represents not just literal monsters under the bed, but also the internal struggles, fears, and societal judgments that the singer faces. Jão uses this word to explore themes of loneliness, self-acceptance, and overcoming inner demons, making it a central and powerful image throughout the song.

Jão starts small and physical: "Sinto um nó na minha garganta" (I feel a knot in my throat), and his voice shakes on the way out. The monsters are the ones from childhood, the kind that live under the bed and keep you awake. What makes the first verse sting is one honest line: "Sempre lutei por liberdade, mas ser livre me fez só" (I always fought for freedom, but being free left me alone). He got what he wanted and it cost him.

Then the chorus flips everything. Barefoot and with "fogo no olhar" (fire in my eyes), he goes hunting for his place, hugs the darkness that was always home, and runs with his wolves around a fire. It is a bit dramatic, and that is the fun of it. The sharpest jab is aimed at everyone who doubted "Desse menino do interior" (this boy from the countryside). The bridge is the tender part, where he talks to his younger self: "Eu sei que vai doer" (I know it will hurt), but it is needed for who you are going to be.

Jão is the stage name of João Vitor Romania Balbino, a pop singer and songwriter born in 1994 in Américo Brasiliense, a small town in the interior of São Paulo state. He started out posting covers on YouTube in 2016, the videos caught the attention of producers Pedro Dash and Marcelinho Ferraz, and his first single, "Dança pra Mim", came out at the end of that year.

His albums Lobos (2018), Anti-Herói (2019), Pirata (2021) and Super (2023) are mostly heartbreak records, full of songs about loving someone a little too much or a little too late. "Vou Morrer Sozinho", "Imaturo", "Idiota" and "Essa Eu Fiz pro Nosso Amor" are the ones his fans sing loudest, and he teamed up with Anitta on "Pilantra". Each album got its own big tour, and the SuperTurnê filled arenas across Brazil.
