Desplumar literally means "to pluck feathers from a bird." It's a vivid and somewhat aggressive verb that isn't commonly found in everyday song lyrics.
In "Caníbal," iLe uses it metaphorically in the line "El corazón desplumado" (The heart plucked/fleeced). This suggests a feeling of being stripped bare, vulnerable, or even exploited emotionally, adding a raw and intense layer to the song's themes of self-discovery and transformation.
iLe's "Caníbal" turns heartbreak into an act of self-surgery. She opens numb, confessing "Se estrujan mis sentidos" [my senses are crushed] and "No puedo despertar" [I can not wake up], describing a body "ya curtido" [already hardened] that still wants to try again. To move forward she has to "Acuchillar mis miedos" [stab my fears] and "Desenchufar todos mis dedos" [unplug all my fingers], cutting loose the desires that keep her stuck.
The chorus circles back to the same fall every time: "(Caí)" [I fell], "Estando arriba" [being up], "Y era mentira" [and it was a lie] — the high of love collapsing into a lie. In the bridge she pushes the metaphor further, turning her own heartbreak into cannibalism: "Un cuerpo fue devorado" [a body was devoured], "El corazón desplumado" [the plucked heart], "En mí estaba latiendo" [was beating inside me]. She survives by consuming and rebuilding herself, "Fui descociendo mi ser" [I was unstitching my being] to find out who is left underneath.
iLe, from Puerto Rico, first became known as the sole female vocalist in the popular group Calle 13, performing alongside her brothers. After years with the band, she embarked on a solo career, bringing her voice to new projects.
Her solo work often blends traditional Latin American styles, like bolero and bomba, with contemporary sounds. Her debut album, iLevitable, earned her a Grammy. She has continued to release acclaimed music, including the albums Almadura and Nacarile.
