verdugoexecutioner

Verdugo literally translates to "executioner" or "hangman." It's a strong and somewhat dark word that stands out in the lyrics.

In the context of the song, the narrator, Marito Choclos, describes himself as "un verdugo del rancho del vizcaíno." This suggests he was a formidable and perhaps ruthless figure from that specific ranch, implying a role in enforcing power or justice, or even carrying out violent acts within his world. It adds a layer of intrigue to his character.

"Fui Marito Choklos" tells the story of a man from Culiacan, Sinaloa, who introduces himself as Jorge Mario Valenzuela, better known by his nickname "Marito Choklos."

He describes driving around in a white Mercedes, making connections through the used car business, and eventually becoming known within the Sinaloa cartel. The song moves through pride in his reputation, nights spent drinking with friends, and warm memories of the people around him.

By the end, he reflects on how he wants to be remembered: as someone with a big heart and a loyal friend, even as he says goodbye to Culiacan.

This is a corrido, a Mexican storytelling ballad. It follows the classic style of these songs: first person narration, real names and places, and a mix of pride and nostalgia.

Grupo Marca Registrada built itself around Fidel Castro, the Culiacán singer, songwriter and accordionist who started the group in 2013, with Luis Fernando Medina on drums, Fidel Jiménez on bass and Ángel Móndragon on guitar and backing vocals. They came up playing Pacific norteño and corridos, then started sliding dance and electronic production in under the accordion, so the records land somewhere between a Sinaloa cantina and a club.

"Di Que Sí", their 2023 duet with Grupo Frontera written by Edgar Barrera, went to number one on Billboard's Regional Mexican Airplay chart and gave them their first Hot 100 entry at number 89. The album Don't Stop the Magic followed that May and reached number 187 on the Billboard 200. "El Rescate" with Junior H had already spent seven weeks on the Global 200, and in 2024 they got Julieta Venegas to recut her 2003 song "Andar Conmigo" as a norteño duet with Castro.
