abolengolineage / ancestry

Abolengo refers to noble lineage or ancestry, suggesting a privileged background or inherited status. It's a more formal and less common word than simply saying

Grupo Marca Registrada's "El Inocente" is a corrido that refuses to pick a side of its own narrator. He opens by offering up his own story — "¿Quieren que cuente mi historia? Con gusto yo se las cuento" ["Do you want me to hear my story? Gladly, I'll tell it to you"] — then spends the song describing a life built from nothing after moving to the city, where he drinks and smokes without calling himself an addict and shrugs off being "tratan como basura" ["treated like trash"] by recycling himself. The song's turn is "Pero también muy culero, todo depende de la historia" ["But also a real jerk, it all depends on the story"] — he's not claiming innocence, just context.

He traces his edge to work rather than money he was handed: "Yo no soy hijo de papi, me esforcé por lo que tengo" ["I'm no daddy's boy, I earned what I have"]. The closing verses turn on the people around him, who smile to his face and stab him in the back, landing on "Aquí todo es competencia y te chingan si haces feria" ["Here everything is competition, and they screw you over the moment you make money"] — a corrido about staying standing once everyone else has picked a side.

Grupo Marca Registrada built itself around Fidel Castro, the Culiacán singer, songwriter and accordionist who started the group in 2013, with Luis Fernando Medina on drums, Fidel Jiménez on bass and Ángel Móndragon on guitar and backing vocals. They came up playing Pacific norteño and corridos, then started sliding dance and electronic production in under the accordion, so the records land somewhere between a Sinaloa cantina and a club.

"Di Que Sí", their 2023 duet with Grupo Frontera written by Edgar Barrera, went to number one on Billboard's Regional Mexican Airplay chart and gave them their first Hot 100 entry at number 89. The album Don't Stop the Magic followed that May and reached number 187 on the Billboard 200. "El Rescate" with Junior H had already spent seven weeks on the Global 200, and in 2024 they got Julieta Venegas to recut her 2003 song "Andar Conmigo" as a norteño duet with Castro.
