devuelvo — I return

Devuelvo means "I return" or "I give back". While it's a common verb, the way it's used in this song is what makes it so powerful and unique.

Grupo Frontera sings, "Pero yo, hasta los besos, te devuelvo" (But me, I'm even returning the kisses to you). This is a dramatic metaphor for wanting to erase every part of a past relationship. It’s a creative and unforgettable way to declare that things are truly over, wanting to give back even the intangible memories.

This song is a direct message to an ex after a tough breakup. The singer makes it clear he's not coming back, telling her, "Olvídalo y olvídame / Si pensabas que iba a rogarte pa' volver" (Forget it and forget me / If you thought I was going to beg you to come back). He feels like she never really knew him and makes the very confident claim that any love she finds after him "va a ser un chiste" (will be a joke).

He says his feelings have completely flipped. The chorus repeats the powerful line, "Yo te quería y ya no" (I loved you and not anymore), explaining that the same passion he once had for her has now turned to hate. He's so finished with the relationship that he tells her to keep his things, but he's giving everything back, even the kisses: "hasta los besos, te devuelvo" (I'm even returning the kisses). It's a song about drawing a line and refusing to look back.

Grupo Frontera were playing weddings and parties around Edinburg, Texas, deep in the Rio Grande Valley, when a TikTok clip of their cover of Morat's "No Se Va" got away from them in 2022. The five of them are Adelaido "Payo" Solís III on lead vocals, Juan Javier Cantú on accordion, Alberto "Beto" Acosta on bajo quinto, Julian Peña Jr. on congas and Carlos Guerrero on drums. What they play is norteño sitting on a cumbia backbeat: miserable lyrics at a tempo you can dance to.

"Bebe Dame" with Fuerza Regida took them to No. 1 on Hot Latin Songs, and "un x100to" with Bad Bunny went to No. 5 on the Hot 100 and won the 2023 Latin Grammy for Best Regional Mexican Song. Their debut album El Comienzo won Best Norteño Album the year after, followed by Jugando a Que No Pasa Nada in 2024 and Lo Que Me Falta Por Llorar in 2025. Shakira called them in for "(Entre Paréntesis)", Maluma for "Por Qué Será" and Carín León for "Que Vuelvas". In 2026 they took two Grammy nominations for Best Música Mexicana Album.
