comete — comets

Comete means "comets" in Italian. It's a celestial and somewhat rare word to find in everyday song lyrics, making it intriguing.

In the song, GionnyScandal uses it poetically to describe a perfect union: "Finché saremo due stelle comete, complete, come te" (Until we are two comets, complete, like you). It evokes an image of two individuals shining brightly together, completing each other like a pair of celestial bodies.

"Come(te)" plays on a pun: "come te" means "like you," and the title also spells out "comets." GionnyScandal builds the whole song around that double meaning, comparing the person he loves to a comet streaking across the sky.

The verses are full of small, clumsy, tender moments: wanting to give a hug but his arm has fallen asleep under the pillow, asking to be told when he messes up, promising never to let her get hurt. It stays light and playful rather than heavy or dramatic.

The chorus is where the pun lands: he calls himself her other half, her gravitational center, and imagines the two of them as comet stars, complete only when they are together. It is a sweet, uncomplicated love song about wanting to be someone's missing piece.

GionnyScandal is the stage name of Gionata Ruggieri, an Italian singer, songwriter and rapper born in 1991 in Pisticci, in the southern region of Basilicata. His childhood was shaped by loss: adopted as a toddler and raised in Seregno just north of Milan, he lost his adoptive father at four, his mother at eleven, and in 2012 the grandmother who had brought him up. Those years became the raw material of almost everything he writes.

He started making a name for himself in the Italian rap scene around 2010 and released his first studio album, "Haters Make Me Famous vol. 3", in 2011. Since then he has become one of the defining voices of Italian emo rap, a style that sets melodic, sung hooks against blunt and confessional lyrics, and he has collaborated widely, including with pop veteran Max Pezzali. "MI MANCHERAI" arrived in 2023, one of the singles that led into his "Black Mood 2" project.
