valija — suitcase

Valija translates to "suitcase" or "luggage". While seemingly simple, it's a less common word in everyday Spanish songs compared to more generic terms for bags.

In the context of the song, Fito Páez sings, "Llevo mucha nada en la valija" (I carry a lot of nothing in my suitcase). This line is quite evocative, suggesting a journey with emotional baggage that is empty or perhaps filled with intangible things, making the word "valija" stand out as a symbol of this internal journey.

Lleva opens with the command that becomes its whole argument: "Lleva, lleva el corazón la luz" (Carry, carry the light in your heart). Fito Páez spends the rest of the song handing you more things to take along for no stated reason - the caress, the apples and the cake, the fire, even "mucha nada en la valija" (a lot of nothing in the suitcase). It plays like a packing list for a trip nobody explains, which is the point.

The turn comes with a flat piece of arena wisdom: "Nadie sale vivo al ruedo" (Nobody comes out of the ring alive). So gripping tighter is not the answer - "Déjate llevar" (let yourself be carried) is. Written for Rey Sol in 2000, Lleva is less a love song than an argument for handing yourself over to whatever is pulling you, love and pain both.
