turbina' — turbines

Turbina' is a colloquial shortening of "turbinas," meaning "turbines." It's an interesting word because it's not commonly found in song lyrics and directly relates to the song's theme of taking off and reaching new heights.

In the context of the song, Farruko uses "turbina'" metaphorically to represent the powerful force or energy he's unleashing to "despegar" (take off) in his career and life. It evokes a sense of propulsion, speed, and breaking barriers, making it a dynamic and memorable choice.

The whole song sits on a runway with the engines already spinning. Farruko opens above the weather — "Camino por las nubes, no paro de soñar" (I walk through the clouds, I don't stop dreaming) — and then gives the reason the altitude doesn't scare him: "To' lo que baja, sube, pero aprendí a flotar" (whatever comes down goes back up, but I learned to float). The hook repeats until it works like a countdown: "Ya prendí las turbina', ahora es que voy a despegar" (I've already fired up the turbines, now I'm taking off).

Halfway through he puts you in the seat beside him. "Abróchate el cinturón" (fasten your seatbelt) arrives with a warning about the noise — "Le rompí la barrera de sonido" (I broke the sound barrier), "Se les taparon los oído'" (their ears sealed shut) — and about who has to sit through it: "Pero por primera vez serán testigo'" (but for the first time they'll be witnesses). The Spanish is clipped the way it is spoken in Puerto Rico, so listen for the dropped endings: turbina' for turbinas, pa' for para, oído' for oídos, testigo' for testigos.

Carlos Efrén Reyes Rosado was writing songs at eleven, then left school to fix cars alongside his father in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, and built his first audience on MySpace. As Farruko he put out El Talento del Bloque in 2010, at nineteen.

The big records came through other people's at first: "6 AM" with J Balvin, "Passion Whine" with Sean Paul, "Krippy Kush" with Bad Bunny and Rvssian, and the "Calma" remix with Pedro Capó, which took a Latin Grammy in 2019. Then "Pepas" in 2021, guaracha electrónica built on Colombian club music rather than reggaeton, hit number one on Hot Latin Songs and has passed 1.7 billion Spotify streams. In February 2022 he stopped a Miami arena show to preach for about fifteen minutes, refused to sing "Pepas" and apologised for its lyrics, and told the crowd that Farru was retired and Carlos was there now. He returned to touring in May 2023 and released the 26-track CVRBON VRMOR in October 2024.
