respiro — breath

Respiro literally translates to "breath." While seemingly simple, it's used in a very evocative way in this song.

Elodie sings, "Se tra me e te c'è un filo che mi toglie il respiro" (If there's a thread between you and me that takes my breath away). This phrase beautifully captures the intensity of her feelings, suggesting a love so powerful it literally makes her gasp. It's a common Italian idiom for being overwhelmed by emotion, making it an interesting and relatable expression to learn.

Elodie spends this song trying to keep one night from ending. "La notte passa / Ma non tu non vai" ("The night passes / But you don't go") is the whole wish, and everything after it is a defence — first against the audience: "Il mondo ci guarda / Ma che ne sa di noi?" ("The world is watching us / But what does it know about us?"), then against the two of them. They keep pretending: "Mi cerchi ma facciamo finta di essere distanti" ("You look for me but we pretend to be distant"), and she names the cost in the next breath — "Ma più ci proviamo, più ci ritroviamo negli altri" ("But the more we try, the more we end up finding ourselves in other people").

The chorus refuses to argue. It repeats boy, boy, boy until the word wears down to a sound, then adds the only condition that matters: "Solo con te" ("Only with you"). Around it the details stay small and physical — "Potrei ballare fino a che la testa gira" ("I could dance until my head spins"), "La tua voce / Come onde" ("Your voice / like waves"), "Cambio i capelli / Come cambia l'umore" ("I change my hair the way my mood changes"). The last thing she asks for is the smallest line in the song: "Resta con me questa notte" ("Stay with me tonight").

Elodie, from Italy, first gained widespread attention after appearing on the talent show Amici di Maria De Filippi. She quickly established herself with powerful vocals and a confident stage presence.

Her music often features catchy pop rhythms, sometimes blending with electronic sounds. She is known for songs like "Andromeda," "Bagno a mezzanotte," and "Due," and has released albums including This Is Elodie and Ok. Respira.
