Eisblumen — Ice flowers

Eisblumen literally translates to "ice flowers" or "frost flowers." It's a beautiful and evocative compound word that perfectly captures the imagery of delicate frost patterns on windows in winter.

In the song, the band Eisblume (which is also their name) uses this word as a metaphor for themselves and their identity. They sing, "Wir sind wie Eisblumen / Wir blühen in der Nacht / Viel zu schön für den Tag" (We are like ice flowers / We bloom in the night / Too beautiful for the day). This suggests a fragile, nocturnal beauty that thrives in darkness and is perhaps too delicate or intense for the harsh light of day, making it a central and intriguing theme of the song.

This song is a beautiful anthem for anyone who feels more at home in the dark. The singer describes a group of people who come alive when the sun goes down. As the day "flieht eilig aus der Stadt" [flees hastily from the city], they reveal their true selves. They see beauty in the cold and the dark, comparing themselves to frost patterns on a window: "Wir sind wie Eisblumen / Wir blühen in der Nacht" [We are like ice flowers / We bloom in the night].

They feel they are "viel zu schön für den Tag" [much too beautiful for the day], which they describe as "grell und rau" [glaring and rough]. The daylight makes them uncomfortable and forces them to hide, so they wait for the night to return. It's a powerful song about finding your own kind of beauty and your own place to shine, even if it's in the cold and the dark.

Eisblume was a pop-rock band from Berlin built around singer Sotiria "Ria" Schenk. Formed in late 2007, the group spent its first year opening shows for Ich + Ich before its own breakthrough arrived in January 2009.

That breakthrough was "Eisblumen," a gothic-tinged cover of a Subway to Sally song that sent Eisblume into Germany's Top 5 and anchored their debut album, Unter dem Eis, released that March. A second album, Ewig, followed in 2012, led by the single "Für immer," before the band split in 2013. Schenk kept making music on her own, releasing the solo album Hallo Leben in 2018.
